?

The Lure of extreme sports Have you ever had the sudden urge to ride your bike off of a cliff and do aerial summersaults into a lake one hundred feet below? Believe it or not, this is just one of the emerging hobbies of extreme sports enthusiasts these days. But you dont need a bike in order to vault off a cliff; a parachute will do just finet least most of the timend if you have a parachute, you dont need a body of water to break your fall. What on earth motivates people to partake in such feats of madness? What about sailing around the world alone or snowboarding off the rock-cragged face of a mountain? Chances are, if youre like most people, you are perfectly content to be an armchair enthusiast when it comes to the intriguing and amazing world of extreme sports. Let the crazy, courageous souls of the world risk their lives and press the limits of human endurance; you say to yourself, while you sit in your safe, comfortable recliner and eat a bowl of ice cream. After all, you risk plenty just driving to work during rush hour traffic. The most important thing in the selection of the isabel marant shoes is to understand the importance of creating a personal image.. You may or may not be one of them, but there seems to be a certain kind of individual who is born to push the limits. They thrive on the challenge and the adrenalin rush experienced when they risk it all and come out intact. They take pride in doing something few humans have ever done before or would ever even dare to try. Competition is in their blood, and there is a growing number of ways in which these athletes can compete on both an amateur and a professional level. Although many athletes compete in extreme sports competitions, there are others who just embark on various death-defying feats for the pure thrill of it. Scuba diving, sky-diving, and bull riding, for instance, have been around for a long time, but many contemporary and dangerous activities have come along to bump these off the top of the list. When you want to buy a Moncler Jackets Sale on our website, maybe you will worry about fabric quality. So we could ship the fabric sample out to you. You could check it, and then buy the dress from us.. Storm chasing, though technically not a sport, is one of them, and its becoming more popular, especially since TV shows have brought it to the masses. Then theres bungee jumping, something even an amateur can do. Those who have tried it and lived through it can attest to the way their legs shook in the moments before they plummeted toward the ground. As fun as these activities might seem, people dont always survive. Just as with any sport, the athletes assume the risk when they make up their mind to partake. For high school girls, there is no other thing will be more important than choosing a proper wedding wraps for her prom night.. There are a growing number of videos on the Internet showcasing athletes in all manner of extreme recreation that can blow your mind. Some of these feats of athletic danger would never have even been dreamed up years ago, yet they have become a reality. Its amazing what the human body can accomplish if a person can envision it and set his or her mind to it. It leaves one to wonder what the next big craze is going to be in the world of extreme sports.Just as what has mentioned above, Louis Vuitton Women Wallet in early times are very traditional.. Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous | Psych Central News

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 23, 2012

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous Successful solo rock and pop stars are twice as likely to die early as those in a band, according to new research.

The researchers also found that rock stars who died from drug or alcohol misuse were more likely to have had a difficult or abusive childhood.

For the study, the researchers included 1,489 North American and European rock and pop stars over a 50-year period between 1956 (Elvis Presley) and 2006 (Regina Spektor, The Arctic Monkeys, and Snow Patrol).

Their successes were determined from international polls and top 40 chart hits, while details of their personal lives and childhoods were drawn from a range of music and official websites, published biographies, and anthologies, the researchers explain.

During the 50-year period, 137 (9.2 percent) famous rock stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.

The gap in life expectancy between rock and pop stars and the general population widened consistently until 25 years after fame had been achieved, after which death rates began to approach those of the general population ? but only for European stars.

Solo performers were around twice as likely to die early as those in a band, whether they were European (9.8 percent solo vs 5.4 percent in a band) or North American (22.8 percent vs 10.2 percent).

The researchers speculate that the peer support offered by bandmates may be protective. In other words, the social support of friends can help alleviate the stress and loneliness of touring on the road.

While gender and the age at which fame was reached did not influence life expectancy, ethnicity did, with those from non-white backgrounds more likely to die early, according to the study.

The chances of survival increased among those achieving fame after 1980, researchers noted.

Nearly half of those who died as a result of drugs, alcohol, or violence had at least one unfavorable factor in their childhoods, compared with one in four of those dying of other causes.

Unfavorable factors included physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; living with a chronically depressed, suicidal, mentally or physically ill person; living with a substance abuser; having a close relative in prison; and coming from a broken home or one in which domestic violence occurred.

Four out of five dead stars with more than one unfavorable childhood factor died from substance misuse or violence-related causes, according to the study.

A career as a rock star may be attractive to those escaping an unhappy childhood, but it may also provide the resources to feed a predisposition to unhealthy or risky behaviors, say the researchers.

?Pop/rock stars are among the most common role models for children, and surveys suggest that growing numbers aspire to pop stardom,? they write in the study, which was published in the online journal BMJ Open.

?A proliferation of TV talent shows and new opportunities created by the Internet can make this dream appear more achievable than ever. It is important they [children] recognize that substance use and risk-taking may be rooted in childhood adversity rather than seeing them as symbols of success.?

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? The earthquake all but flattened colonial Lima, the shaking so violent that people tossed to the ground couldn't get back up. Minutes later, a 50-foot (15-meter) wall of Pacific Ocean crashed into the adjacent port of Callao, killing all but 200 of its 5,000 inhabitants. Bodies washed ashore for weeks.

Plenty of earthquakes have shaken Peru's capital in the 266 years since that fateful night of Oct. 28, 1746, though none with anything near the violence.

The relatively long "seismic silence" means that Lima, set astride one of the most volatile ruptures in the Earth's crust, is increasingly at risk of being hammered by a one-two, quake-tsunami punch as calamitous as what devastated Japan last year and traumatized Santiago, Chile, and its nearby coast a year earlier, seismologists say.

Yet this city of 9 million people is sorely unprepared. From densely clustered, unstable housing to a dearth of first-responders, its acute vulnerability is unmatched regionally. Peru's National Civil Defense Institute forecasts up to 50,000 dead, 686,000 injured and 200,000 homes destroyed if Lima is hit by a magnitude-8.0 quake.

"In South America, it is the most at risk," said architect Jose Sato, director of the Center for Disaster Study and Prevention, or PREDES, a non-governmental group financed by the charity Oxfam that is working on reducing Lima's quake vulnerability.

Lima is home to a third of Peru's population, 70 percent of its industry, 85 percent of its financial sector, its entire central government and the bulk of international commerce.

"A quake similar to what happened in Santiago would break the country economically," said Gabriel Prado, Lima's top official for quake preparedness. That quake had a magnitude of 8.8.

Quakes are frequent in Peru, with about 170 felt by people annually, said Hernando Tavera, director of seismology at the country's Geophysical Institute. A big one is due, and the chances of it striking increase daily, he said. The same collision of tectonic plates responsible for the most powerful quake ever recorded, a magnitude-9.5 quake that hit Chile in 1960, occurs just off Lima's coast, where about 3 inches of oceanic crust slides annually beneath the continent.

A 7.5-magnitude quake in 1974 a day's drive from Lima in the Cordillera Blanca range killed about 70,000 people as landslides buried villages. Seventy-eight people died in the capital. In 2007, a 7.9-magnitude quake struck even closer, killing 596 people in the south-central coastal city of Pisco.

A shallow, direct hit is the big danger.

More than two in five Lima residents live either in rickety structures built on unstable, sandy soil and wetlands, which amplify a quake's destructive power, or in hillside settlements that sprang up over a generation as people fled conflict and poverty in Peru's interior. Thousands are built of colonial-era adobe.

Most quake-prone countries have rigorous building codes to resist seismic events. In Chile, if engineers and builders don't adhere to them they can face prison. Not so in Peru.

"People are building with adobe just as they did in the 17th century," said Carlos Zavala, director of Lima's Japanese-Peruvian Center for Seismic Investigation and Disaster Mitigation.

Environmental and human-made perils compound the danger.

Situated in a coastal desert, Lima gets its water from a single river, the Rimac, which a landslide could easily block. That risk is compounded by a containment pond full of toxic heavy metals from an old mine that could rupture and contaminate the Rimac, said Agustin Gonzalez, a PREDES official advising Lima's government.

Most of Lima's food supply arrives via a two-lane highway that parallels the river, another potential chokepoint.

Lima's airport and seaport, the key entry points for international aid, are also vulnerable. Both are in Callao, which seismologists expect to be scoured by a 20-foot (6-meter) tsunami if a big quake is centered offshore, the most likely scenario.

Mayor Susana Villaran's administration is Lima's first to organize a quake-response and disaster-mitigation plan. A February 2011 law obliged Peru's municipalities to do so. Yet Lima's remains incipient.

"How are the injured going to be attended to? What is the ability of hospitals to respond? Of basic services? Water, energy, food reserves? I don't think this is being addressed with enough responsibility," said Tavera of the Geophysical Institute.

By necessity, most injured will be treated where they fall, but Peru's police have no comprehensive first-aid training. Only Lima's 4,000 firefighters, all volunteers, have such training, as does a 1,000-officer police emergency squadron.

But because the firefighters are volunteers, a quake's timing could influence rescue efforts.

"If you go to a fire station at 10 in the morning there's hardly anyone there," said Gonzalez, who advocates a full-time professional force.

In the next two months, Lima will spend nearly $2 million on the three fire companies that cover downtown Lima, its first direct investment in firefighters in 25 years, Prado said. The national government is spending $18 million citywide for 50 new fire trucks and ambulances.

But where would the ambulances go?

A 1997 study by the Pan American Health Organization found that three of Lima's principal public hospitals would likely collapse in a major quake, but nothing has been done to reinforce them.

And there are no free beds. One public hospital, Maria Auxiliadora, serves more than 1.2 million people in Lima's south but has just 400 beds, and they are always full.

Contingency plans call for setting up mobile hospitals in tents in city parks. But Gonzalez said only about 10,000 injured could be treated.

Water is also a worry. The fire threat to Lima is severe ? from refineries to densely-backed neighborhoods honeycombed with colonial-era wood and adobe. Lima's firefighters often can't get enough water pressure to douse a blaze.

"We should have places where we can store water not just to put out fires but also to distribute water to the population," said Sato, former head of the disaster mitigation department at Peru's National Engineering University.

The city's lone water-and-sewer utility can barely provide water to one-tenth of Lima in the best of times.

Another big concern: Lima has no emergency operations center and the radio networks of the police, firefighters and the Health Ministry, which runs city hospitals, use different frequencies, hindering effective communication.

Nearly half of the city's schools require a detailed evaluation to determine how to reinforce them against collapse, Sato said.

A recent media blitz, along with three nationwide quake-tsunami drills this year, helped raise consciousness. The city has spent more than $77 million for retention walls and concrete stairs to aid evacuation in hillside neighborhoods, Prado said, but much more is needed.

At the biggest risk, apart from tsunami-vulnerable Callao, are places like Nueva Rinconada.

A treeless moonscape in the southern hills, it is a haven for economic refugees who arrive daily from Peru's countryside and cobble together precarious homes on lots they scored into steep hillsides with pickaxes.

Engineers who have surveyed Nueva Rinconada call its upper reaches a death trap. Most residents understand this but say they have nowhere else to go.

Water arrives in tanker trucks at $1 per 200 liters (52 gallons) but is unsafe to drink unless boiled. There is no sanitation; people dig their own latrines. There are no streetlamps, and visibility is erased at night as Lima's bone-chilling fog settles into the hills.

Homes of wood, adobe and straw matting rest on piled-rock foundations that engineers say will crumble and rain down on people below in a major quake.

A recently built concrete retaining wall at the valley's head lies a block beneath the thin-walled wood home of Hilarion Lopez, a 55-year-old janitor and community leader. It might keep his house from sliding downhill, but boulders resting on uphill slopes could shake loose and crush him and his neighbors.

"We've made holes and poured concrete around some of the more unstable boulders," he says, squinting uphill in a strong late morning sun.

He's not so worried if a quake strikes during daylight.

"But if I get caught at night? How do I see a rock?"

Bill Bennett, Former Education Secretary, Says Schools Should Consider Arming Employees

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting that claimed 26 lives Friday, former Education Secretary Bill Bennett said Sunday that schools should possibly consider arming certain employees to prevent attacks.

"Let's remember the good things here: the heroism of those teachers and that principal," Bennett said on "Meet the Press." "And I'm not so sure -- and I'm sure I'll get mail for this -- I'm not so sure I wouldn't want one person in a school armed, ready for this kind of thing."

"The principal lunged at this guy," Bennett, who served as education secretary under Ronald Reagan, went on. "The school psychologist lunged at the guy. It has to be someone who's trained, responsible. But, my god, if you can prevent this kind of thing, I think you ought to."

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, advised against arming school employees.

"Schools have to be safe sanctuaries," she said. "We need to actually stop this routine view that just having more guns will actually make people safer. We are opposed to having someone who has access to guns."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also said more guns weren't the answer.

"Is this the way we want America to go?" Feinstein said. "In other words, the rights of the few overcome the safety of the majority? I don't think so."

Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook School has launched a national debate on gun control, with Feinstein announcing Sunday that she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons on the first day of the new Congress. The massacre has also renewed a discussion on school security, with Newtown now the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, behind Virginia Tech.

Feinstein laid out details of her bill on Sunday, saying, "it will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively," and also ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets. "The purpose of this bill is to get ... weapons of war off the streets," she said.

A previous assault weapons ban was signed into law in 1994 but expired ten years later.

Little telescope spies gigantic galaxy clusters

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? Our solar system, with its colorful collection of planets, asteroids and comets, is a fleck in the grander cosmos. Hundreds of billions of solar systems are thought to reside in our Milky Way galaxy, which is itself just a drop in a sea of galaxies.

The rarest and largest of galaxy groupings, called galaxy clusters, can be the hardest to find. That's where NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) can help. The mission's all-sky infrared maps have revealed one distant galaxy cluster and are expected to uncover thousands more.

These massive structures are collections of up to thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity. They were born out of seeds of matter formed in the very early universe, and grew rapidly by a process called inflation.

"One of the key questions in cosmology is how did the first bumps and wiggles in the distribution of matter in our universe rapidly evolve into the massive structures of galaxies we see today," said Anthony Gonzalez of University of Florida, Gainesville, who led the research program. The results are published in the Astrophysical Journal.

"By uncovering the most massive of galaxy clusters billions of light-years away with WISE, we can test theories of the universe's early inflation period."

WISE completed its all-sky survey in 2011, after surveying the entire sky twice at infrared wavelengths. The 16-inch (40-centimeter) telescope ran out of its coolant as expected in 2010, but went on to complete the second sky scan using two of its four infrared channels, which still functioned without coolant. At that time, the goal of the mission extension was to hunt for more near-Earth asteroids via a project called NEOWISE.

NASA has since funded the WISE team to combine all that data, allowing astronomers to study everything from nearby stars to distant galaxies. These next-generation all-sky images, part of a new project called "AllWISE," will be significantly more sensitive than those previously released, and will be publicly available in late 2013.

Gonzalez and his team plan to use the enhanced WISE data to hunt for more massive galaxy clusters. The first one they spotted, MOO J2342.0+1301, is located more than 7 billion light-years away, or halfway back to the time of the Big Bang. It is hundreds of times more massive than our Milky Way.

By scanning the whole sky with the improved AllWISE data, the team will sleuth out the true monsters of the bunch, clusters as big as thousands of times the mass of the Milky Way, assembled even earlier in the history of the universe.

Galaxy clusters from the first half of the universe are hard to find because they are so far away and because not very many had time to assemble by then. What's more, they are especially hard to see using visible-light telescopes: light that left these faraway structures in visible wavelengths has been stretched into longer, infrared wavelengths due to the expansion of space. WISE can hunt some of these rare colossal structures down because it scanned the whole sky in infrared light.

"I had pretty much written off using WISE to find distant galaxy clusters because we had to reduce the telescope diameter to only 16 inches [40 centimeters] to stay within our cost guidelines, so I am thrilled that we can find them after all," said Peter Eisenhardt, the WISE project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. and an author of the new paper. "The longer exposures from AllWISE open the door wide to see the most massive structures forming in the distant universe."

Other projects planned for the enhanced WISE data include the search for nearby, hidden cool stars, including those with masses as low as planets. If a large planet or tiny star does exist close to our solar system, an object some call "Tyche," then WISE's infrared data may reveal it.

Other authors of the new study are: Daniel Gettings and Conor Mancone of the University of Florida; Adam Stanford of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, Calif., and University of California, Davis; Mark Brodwin of University of Missouri, Kansas City; Daniel Stern of JPL; Gregory Zeimann of University of California, Davis; Frank Masci of the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena; Casey Papovich of Texas A&M University, College Station; Ichi Tanaka of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan; and Edward (Ned) Wright of UCLA.

JPL manages, and operated, WISE for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. Edward Wright is the principal investigator and is at UCLA. The mission was selected competitively under NASA's Explorers Program managed by the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The science instrument was built by the Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, Utah. The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo. Science operations and data processing take place at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Caltech manages JPL for NASA. Tri Property announces December sales launch for Zcape ...

    Zcape Condominium, Phuket

Following the sell-out success in July of Zcape Condominium in Phuket, developer Tri Property Co., Ltd announced the launch of a second Z-Style condo project in the prime west coast location in Cherng Talay: Zcape X2 Condominium.

Aimed at offering affordable, upmarket accommodation with energy-saving eco design concepts in a cosmopolitan community next to the trendy new shopping street Boat Avenue and near the high-end Laguna property, sales of Zcape X2 Condominium?s 19 furnished one- and two-bedroom units are set to launch on December 15. The units will start at THB1.49 million (US$48,500).

Tri Property CEO Adisorn Vivakanond said the Zcape condo concept had proven an ideal addition to the growing international community, offering style, functionality and convenience in one of Phuket?s prime locations.

Rising seven storeys, including a parking level, Zcape X2 Condominium comprises three unit designs: Lake View ranging in size from 26 to 31 sqm; One-Bedroom Pool View ranging in size from 31 to 36 sqm; and Two-Bedroom units measuring between 41 to 41 sqm. Each unit features a variety of innovative space-saving details in the design, including interchangeable living space and a fully-equipped kitchen with plenty of storage space.

On-site facilities include a large swimming pool with children?s play pool and hydro jet area that has a view of nearby hills, a pool lounge for recreational functions, a glass-walled fitness centre with an all-round view, plus 24-hour manned security, a reception area and CCTV.

?Making Zcape condo units stylish, practical and affordable for the next generation of local residents in such a choice location were decisive factors in the rapid sell out of all Zcape condo units in July,? said Adisorn.

?The Cherngtalay location of Zcape X2 Condominium was carefully selected to give residents the best balance possible to meet today?s lifestyle needs. The architecture and north-south alignment of the project take full advantage of the spacious natural surroundings to provide energy-saving solutions in the form of natural shade and ventilation. The condo is also located within walking distance of Boat Avenue?s trendy new mall, which is destined to become one of the island?s trendiest new meeting places with shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and a Villa Market.?

With AEC integration for Thailand just around the corner, Adison said Zcape X2 was a highly attractive investment in high-quality housing in a world-class tourist destination as Phuket continues to boom as a regional hub, where the residential and transient population is increasing significantly year by year.

?Joining the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015 will bring an influx of trade and investment that will further fuel the demand in Phuket for high-quality condominiums. Local and international investors have already shown faith in the future of Phuket as a regional commercial and tourism hub,? said Adisorn.

The Zcape X2 Condominium eco-design concept extends to many aspects of daily life, such as bicycle parking to encourage pollution-free travel and dedicated storage for recycling rubbish.

Tri Property executive chairman and Phuket native, Chaiwat Tantiwiwat, said Tri Property?s plans for Phuket include at least two or three more condominium and residential projects to be launched in 2013, located on other land plots with similarly high potential. The company is also looking at other sites in southern Thailand, including Had Yai, Songkla and Surat Thani.

Spain to tap around 40 billion euros in EU funds for banks

BRUSSELS/MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish Economy Minister Luis De Guindos confirmed on Monday that the country's government would request around 40 billion euros ($52 billion) in European financial aid for its troubled banks.

"For the nationalized banks (...) the amount is going to be around 37 billion euros. In all, we are talking about 40 billion euros, which is the number we have always had in mind, about 3.5 percent of GDP," he told reporters in Brussels.

The total takes into account a public capital injection for the bad bank and some limited capital needs for banks which have not been fully nationalized.

Spain was granted up to 100 billion euros of aid in June as part of a euro zone rescue fund to clean up a banking sector crippled since a property bubble burst five years ago. Newspapers and ministers have talked about an initial tranche of around 40 billion euros that had until now not been officially confirmed.

Bankia, which sought a 23.5 billion euros bailout from the state in May, is expected to take the majority of the bailout money. The other three already nationalized lenders are Novagalicia, CatalunyaCaixa and Banco de Valencia.

El Pais reported on Monday that apart from the 37 billion to be disbursed to these four lenders 2.5 billion euros would be injected to capitalize the recently-created bad bank, known as Sareb.

The newspaper said an additional 2 billion to 3 billion euros of European Union funds would be used for other banks that may need public money.

On Sunday, El Pais said European authorities would transfer 35 billion euros to Spain's state bank rescue fund on December 15 in exchange for massive lay-offs at the four nationalized banks.

This followed comments by Spain's deputy economy minister Miguel Temboury last week that the country would probably tap less than 40 billion euros of aid from the euro zone rescue fund.

Treatment as bargaining ? Ian Ford

As for many people, reading ?Don?t Mourn For Us? for the first time was a deep experience, and I hope you will read it if you haven?t. I had the related idea this morning that much of the therapy that is done to autistic children represents people being stuck in the ?bargaining? stage of the ever-popular 5 stages of loss. And the problem with the apparent or actual effectiveness of some of that therapy is that it might prevent those parents from moving forward into depression and then to acceptance. In the list of stages below, the quotes are from a wikipedia contributor, and I?ve added in parentheses what autism parents seem to be doing while in those phases.

    • Denial ? ?This can?t be happening, not to me.? (Doubt the diagnosis is correct.)
    • Anger ? ?Why me? It?s not fair!?; ?Who is to blame?? (Crusade-like search for causes, such as vaccines.)
    • Bargaining ? ?I?ll do anything/give my life savings if?? (Behavioral therapy.)
    • Depression ? ?I?m so sad, why bother with anything?? (Nothing.)
    • Acceptance ? ?It?s going to be okay.? (Support the offspring in their own path!)

In the bargaining stage for some autism parents, they actually do spend their life savings as a way to try to buy back the child that never existed. If the actual child learns to act like that never-existed ghost-child, the false wish-induced memory sparked by that charade may feed the parents ?hopes? and they could stay in that phase of grief for a very long time.

An insightful wiki editor also posted on that same page: ??All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.? said Arthur Schopenhauer of the learning process, which corresponds to the five stages of grief with denial being ridicule, opposition being anger and bargaining, and acceptance being depression and acceptance.? For me, the truth of autism is that people are different, and that enlightenment comes from walking in our own path no matter how unusual that is, not from conforming. Every prophet and major philosopher agrees with me on that point (I mean, I agree with them). Yet some people are violently opposed to that idea, which again tells me that they are very very stuck in the bargaining phase of their grief.

I suspected some parents have used the 5 stages of loss as a self-help tool, and sure enough, a quick web search reveals lots of stories. But in the first 4 that I read, I found only pseudo-acceptance, not real acceptance. Here are some excerpts:

Story #1, explaining a mom?s ?acceptance? of a daughter?s autism: ?I have my moments of sadness that Natasha is autistic ? but I?m realizing more and more that being autistic isn?t the end of the world. It felt like it in the beginning but, through listening to Natasha?s therapists and seeing Natasha making progress in things Tom and I questioned whether she would ever do, I?m learning that it?s not [the end of the world]. It?s still hard. I still have problems when I talk to mothers of children who are around the same age and they tell me their child never stops talking. They inevitably always ask if Natasha does the same thing. Part of me knows it?s just making conversation, small talk ? but it doesn?t stop a little pain going through my heart.? To me this story is about denial (maybe she?ll eventually turn out normal), shame, and depression.

Story #2, admitting she doesn?t accept autism at all: ?The acceptance stage is the one that makes me the most worried and the least confident. ? That stage won?t be complete until I stop wishing I had known more, or stop wanting to turn back the clocks or stop being so determined to tell others that they could have a better chance than I. I have accepted a lot of things in life, much too many to list, but I will never accept that what happened to my child and what started his potentially life-long, debilitating, devastating developmental issues are allowed to be acceptable for the greater good. Never.?

Story #3, using the word ?acceptance? to mean resignation? ?And it has lead into this Acceptance stage. Accepting his physical problems, and continuing to work toward better management and treatment, but not being overly crazy about it. Accepting his skill levels and working with his whole team to improve his learning without being crazy about it?and also showing them how much I really appreciate all that they do for Levi. Accepting that the future is unknown, and that in itself is scary, but it is okay to be scared?and just doing the best we can now, and planning for the future as best we can.?

Story #4, denying the value of acceptance altogether: ?One of my goals ? is to present an alternative to these ?default? stages that treat an autism diagnosis as a devastating loss, [by presenting] a series of steps that parents can take to fully understand their situation and go beyond mere acceptance.?

All this mourning, treatments of defects, ?hope?, and ?progress? are a mental cycle of the parents stuck in their grief. Becoming un-stuck hinges on spiritual depth of the kind that contradicts the cycle.

If you have any kind of spiritual life, you know there is an inside, a soul, or some place where seeds of future growth germinate. You know that great artists have immeasurable gifts that do not come from any school or book, but they are of a deeper sort. If you have ever loved, you have been moved to protect the fragile gifts of someone else, because you wanted those gifts to come out. You believed that there was much more to a person than meets the eye.

Any authentic greatness that a person achieves, whether in the arts or in virtues or in competition, starts deep on the inside, and only the final result is seen on the outside. If a comedian says five words and a million people laugh, how did he do it? The external behavior can easily be copied but the much more significant internal process is unique and not reducible to elements.

When I think of myself, I think of fundamentals and the things that are built on top of the fundamentals, like this:It may not be the same map for everyone ? you could argue that non-autistic people base their knowledge on language, so language might be lower down for them. But in any case, there is depth which drives the surface.

The bargainer?s way out may be to remember their innate knowledge that there is an inside. Everyone knows intuitively that it is there, and even the system of mental health clearly acknowledges this. If you go to find a therapist for yourself, you run across lots of professionals who focus on deep mindfulness and the cognitive and emotional levels, and stress the therapeutic relationship. When the customer is paying the bill, they don?t offer behavior therapy; they focus on the base levels of the pyramid.

But when the parent or the insurance company or government is paying the bill to fix some powerless child who is said to be broken, the ethics suddenly change and the treatment providers are all about the upper, visible parts of the pyramid: the behavior. Even though that is not where the answer lies, the systems of education and ?behavioral health? churn at that level. It is as if there is nothing inside. Or, perhaps the systems suspect something is in there, but they focus only on what they can conquer, and they know they can?t conquer the inside. Or they exist to feed off the bargaining stage of parents? grief, and there is more money to be made that way. Or, perhaps these institutions are actually encroaching on the soul ? where my worst fear begins.

I suspect that people mired in the bargaining phase are often not aware of what it would look like to release that and move on. It would look like you are raising a non-broken child, because that is the truth. Like any other child, you would nurture their strengths and challenge them to the next level. And like any child, you would teach and demand some manners and other behavioral standards. But you would not throw away the soul as a Faustian bargain in exchange for the surface behavior.

Ohio inmate loses bid to stay his execution because of weight

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - A federal judge said on Monday that an Ohio death row inmate weighing more than 450 pounds cannot be given a stay of execution because of his obesity.

Ronald Post, 53, is scheduled to be executed January 16 for the 1983 aggravated murder of hotel clerk Helen Vantz in Elyria, Ohio.

Since his first appeal in 1997, Post's attorneys have argued that his weight, of more than 450 pounds, in combination with the state's death penalty drug protocols creates a certainty of, "substantial risk for serious and psychological pain" and a "torturous and lingering death."

Attorneys for Post argued that his obesity would make it difficult to find a vein for a lethal injection and that the alternative of an intramuscular injection might not kill him because of his weight.

Judge Lesley Wells ruled in federal court in Columbus, Ohio on Monday that Post's latest court filing did not present any new arguments that warranted a stay of execution.

Post was sentenced to death by a three-judge panel in 1985. The prosecution contended that Post confessed to the murder to multiple people and once arrested tried to pay others to kill witnesses.

The motion for a stay of execution will now be sent to the Sixth District Court of Appeals for review.

GOP opposition to diplomat Rice begins to crack

FILE - This June 7, 2012 file photo shows U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice listening during a news conference at the UN. Republican senators' angry criticism of Rice over her initial account of the deadly Sept. 11 attack in Libya smacks of sexism and racism, a dozen female members of the House said Friday. (AP Photo/Bebeto Matthews)

(AP) ? Republican opposition to U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as the next secretary of state began to crack Sunday as Sen. John McCain said she was "not the problem" in the White House's handling of the Sept. 11 attack in Libya and suggested he could be persuaded to swing behind her possible nomination.

McCain's comments provide an opening for the Obama administration, which struggled mightily in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 6 election to tamp down speculation of a cover-up involving the attack against the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi. The assault killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

At issue is Rice's account ? as the administration's representative on the Sunday talk shows Sept. 16 ? that the violence was the spontaneous result of a mob angered by an anti-Muslim video posted on YouTube. She said she relied on talking points provided by the intelligence community that were later discredited.

"I think she deserves the ability and the opportunity to explain herself and her position," McCain, R-Ariz., told "Fox News Sunday." ''But she's not the problem. The problem is the president of the United States" who misled the public on terrorist involvement.

McCain's remarks were in contrast to his previous stance that Rice wasn't qualified to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is expected to step down soon as the top U.S. diplomat, and that he would do "whatever is necessary" to block Rice's possible nomination.

Rice is widely seen as Obama's first choice for the job as secretary of State. As the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain would have considerable sway in the Senate's screening of Rice.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain's close friend and colleague on the committee, told ABC "This Week" he still suspects the White House intentionally glossed over obvious terrorist links in the attack to keep voters from questioning Obama's handling of national security.

But instead of repeating his prior assertion that he was "dead set" against a Rice promotion, Graham suggested he looked forward to hearing her out. If Rice were nominated, "there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others," said Graham, R-S.C.

The subtle shift in GOP tenor on Rice could be the result of internal grumblings on how far to take party opposition. Democrats picked up extra seats in the election to maintain their narrow majority, making it that much harder for the remaining 45 Republicans to block the president's nominees.

One senior GOP Senate aide said Sunday that Republicans hadn't united against Rice and were not convinced that she was worth going after.

"There's a definite sense within the caucus that you have to be conservative about where you put your firepower," said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly on internal GOP deliberations. "The question is whether the caucus is prepared to filibuster her, and I'm not sure we were."

Intelligence officials have said they knew immediately that the Sept. 11 incident was a terrorist attack and suspected that the local al-Qaida branch was involved. But they also initially believed that the attack may have grown spontaneously from a protest against the film.

Unclassified talking points provided to Rice and other administration officials in the days following the attack omitted references to terrorists and al-Qaida because intelligence officials said the information was tenuous and could tip their hand in the investigation. The administration also didn't want to prejudice a criminal investigation.

Rice said she used those talking points in Sept. 16 interviews in defending the administration's protection of overseas diplomats, saying "clusters of extremists" had "hijacked" film protests. Officials say it wasn't until after Rice spoke that intelligence agencies adjusted the assessment to clarify that the attack was not spontaneous or related to a protest.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said Rice should have reviewed the raw classified intelligence and not just relied on unclassified talking points provided to her.

Graham said he remains unconvinced that Rice was relying solely on information provided to her by intelligence agencies. But Graham said he is most concerns with the broader administration's handling of the matter.

"This is about four dead Americans," he said on "This Week" on ABC. "This is about a national security failure. We need a focused look at what happened here."

Dolphins beat Seahawks on last-second FG

MIAMI (AP) - Ryan Tannehill was hardly a rattled rookie as he stood in his end zone, contemplating the long drive the Miami Dolphins needed with the score tied and 92 seconds left.

"You're excited," he said. "You know your team needs you to step up."

Tannehill did just that, moving the Dolphins 65 yards in six plays to set up a 43-yard field goal by Dan Carpenter at the final gun, and they rallied to beat Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks 24-21 Sunday.

Tannehill had drawn criticism for mistakes down the stretch in close games, but he helped Miami score 17 points in the final 8:08. On the last drive he came through with completions of 19, 25 and 7 yards, as well as a 15-yard scramble.

"In this league you need to win some games like this," coach Joe Philbin said. "It's important for any quarterback to do that."

Tannehill pulled off his first fourth-quarter comeback victory, and the Dolphins overcame a seven-point deficit in the final period to win for the first time since 2005. Carpenter hit the winning kick on his 27th birthday to help Miami (5-6) break a three-game losing streak.

The Seahawks (6-5), unbeaten at home this year, lost for the fifth time in six road games, and coach Pete Carroll said he made poor use of last week's bye.

"I'm disappointed in all phases of the game," he said. "We didn't do the things we needed to do in the week off to get prepared. I screwed it up."

Tannehill and Miami caught a break with Seattle leading 14-7 early in the fourth quarter. Bobby Wagner intercepted a pass by Tannehill in the end zone, but the turnover was negated by a penalty on safety Earl Thomas for roughing the passer.

"I can't stop in midair like magic," Thomas said. "The NFL, they need some goggles."

Carroll called the penalty on Thomas questionable.

"He jumped up to block the pass and came down on the quarterback with no intent to hit him," Carroll said. "It was a very big call to make at that point in the game."

One play after the penalty, Daniel Thomas scored the tying touchdown on a 3-yard run. Tannehill chuckled when asked about the officials negating his turnover.

"They were looking out for me today," he said.

Leon Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the eighth time to tie the NFL record and put Seattle ahead with eight minutes left. Miami answered with an 80-yard drive capped by Tannehill's 29-yard pass to Charles Clay, making it 21-21.

Wilson was the better rookie QB for much of the afternoon. He completed 16 consecutive attempts and finished with a hefty passer rating of 125.9.

"We did a lot of great things, but we did some stuff that's not characteristic of us," Wilson said.

The Seahawks lost yardage on their final three plays and were forced to punt from midfield, allowing the Dolphins to start at their own 10 with 1:32 left.

"There was no panic," Tannehill said. "Everyone felt confident out there."

Tannehill quickly moved Miami downfield and finished 18 for 26 for 253 yards and a score. He broke the Dolphins' rookie record of 2,210 yards passing set by Dan Marino in 1983.

Wilson went 21 for 27 for 224 yards and two scores, increasing his season total to 17 TD passes. He also ran for 38 yards.

With the score 14-all, Washington took a kickoff on the run, found a seam, juked past Carpenter and was in the clear to score untouched on a 98-yard return. Washington tied the career record for touchdowns on kickoff returns held by Josh Cribbs of Cleveland.

The lawn sprinklers came on between plays in the third period, causing a brief delay and drawing a roar from the amused crowd. Otherwise Miami fans had little to cheer about until the Dolphins' offense suddenly came to life in the fourth quarter after scoring only two touchdowns over the previous 13 periods.

Mindful of Miami's sputtering offense, Carroll played for field position, punting when his team had the ball at the Miami 40, 48 and 38. The conservative strategy helped keep the Dolphins pinned deep, and they started outside their 20 on only one possession.

Their touchdowns came on drives of 94, 82 and 80 yards.

"We never got rattled," said Davone Bess, who made seven receptions for a career-high 129 yards. "We just continued to stay poised, and Ryan hit the open guys."
