Tigers shut out again after Cabrera's costly popup

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera had his chance with the bases loaded. Instead, he ended up standing alone near third base with his hands on his hips.

Another frustrating moment for the Tigers in a World Series filled with them.

Detroit's Triple Crown winner left the bases loaded in the fifth with a harmless popup, wasting Detroit's best chance to break through against Ryan Vogelsong in Game 3 of the Series on Saturday night. The Tigers ended up losing 2-0 to the San Francisco Giants - their second straight game without a run.

Detroit trails the best-of-seven series 3-0 after becoming the first team since 1966 to be shut out in back-to-back World Series games, according to STATS LLC. Baltimore blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers three times in a row that year.

The Tigers hadn't been shut out twice in a row since 2008, and not in a single postseason since Games 4 and 5 of the 1908 World Series against the Chicago Cubs, according to STATS.

The Tigers had their opportunities. They had a runner on base in seven of the first eight innings, but they hit into double plays to end the first and third.

Cabrera had a chance to put all those frustrations to rest. Down 2-0, Detroit loaded the bases in the fifth on singles by Alex Avila and Omar Infante and a walk by Austin Jackson. Quintin Berry struck out, but Cabrera was waiting to hit next.

With the crowd chanting "MVP!" and the Comerica Park fans desperate for something to happen, Cabrera slapped a line drive down the right-field line, and for an instant, it looked as if he had tied the game or perhaps given the Tigers the lead.

The ball landed a few feet foul. He then popped out to the shortstop.

Detroit left nine men on base in the game.

Returning home after two losses in San Francisco, the Tigers had a chance to strike early when Berry walked and Cabrera singled with one out in the first. But Prince Fielder grounded into a double play to wipe out that threat.

The Giants made Detroit pay immediately, scoring their only two runs in the top of the second.

Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez walked Hunter Pence to start the inning. Before that, Sanchez had faced 95 consecutive right-handed batters without a walk, according to STATS.

This free pass proved costly. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Pence was on third, and he scored on Gregor Blanco's triple. Brandon Crawford's RBI single made it 2-0.

The Tigers grounded into 156 double plays in the regular season, the most in baseball. Berry hit into one in the third Saturday after Infante and Jackson singled.

Detroit made it to the World Series by sweeping the Yankees when New York was in the middle of an awful hitting slump. Now it's the Tigers who haven't been able to score - and they're a loss away from their own four-game exit.

While Detroit never trailed during the ALCS, the Tigers have not led in the World Series.

University of Florida: Where Fitness Is a Way of Life - Fit Bottomed Girls

Home / Featured / University of Florida: Where Fitness Is a Way of Life

Just one of the many fitness options at the?University of Florida!?Photo courtesy of UF RecSports, Facebook

The first time I saw the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Fla., I was blown away by the number of people out running and biking?in January. I had come down from Michigan, and, well, let?s just say that not too many people were climbing over the snow drifts to get in a jog, you know?

Upon attending UF, I learned that the culture of physical fitness is an important aspect of the university, and it?s not only the moderate winter temperatures that encourage it. The University of Florida Department of Recreational Sports provides multiple indoor recreation facilities, nine fields, two pools, six outdoor court facilities and a gym.

Get Out of the Sun

The big draw for fitness enthusiasts is Southwest Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art, 140,000-square-foot facility with a 14,000-square-foot strength and conditioning room, six indoor basketball courts (which work very nicely for volleyball, I can say from experience), six racquetball courts, a multipurpose gym for indoor soccer, handball and basketball, a 15,000 square-foot split-level cardio room, and all the newest, most up-to-date equipment. There?s also a 1/9-mile indoor track, two massage therapy rooms, a personal training studio, a special fitness assessment center, three activity rooms, and a social lounge complete with flat screen televisions, WiFi and a smoothie bar.

If that?s not quite enough, there?s a second facility, the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, with a number of options, and students can always hit the weight room in the O?Connell Center. You know, where the Gators play.

Phew!

Enjoy the Florida Sunshine

Once you step outside (and, let?s be honest?many students choose UF for the sunny weather, including this one!), there?s even more fit fun to be had. Students can sweat it out on 32 tennis courts, five basketball courts, four racquetball/handball courts, three volleyball courts, a skate park and a roller hockey rink, not to mention numerous full-size fields for football and other outdoor sports. And, my personal favorite, nine sand volleyball courts where the competition, at least back in my day, was no joke.

If students go just a few miles south of campus, they?ll find Lake Wauburg, a park where students and faculty can enjoy the outdoors in as physically daunting or as relaxing a way as they please. There?s boating, water-skiing, a climbing wall, disc golf, and even more, and it?s all free for current students.

Get to Class!

As you?ve probably guessed, there are an enormous number of group fitness classes?from which to choose (indoor, outdoor, cycling, strength, mind/body, etc.). Like, we?re talking more than 125 classes weekly. Not bad, right?

And that?s not the only learning available. UF?s Fitness Assessment Center provides students with a free assessment of their current fitness, and the staff is trained to help students use those results to improve their current lifestyle or sport.

Find a Team

Like most other universities, UF has a strong intramural sports program giving students, faculty and staff an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports at all different levels. Wondering what I mean by ?wide variety?? This fall?s schedule includes indoor soccer, indoor volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, softball, flag football, kickball, racquetball, tennis and basketball. And that doesn?t even get into all the one-off tournaments held each semester.

Did you take advantage of programs and facilities like these when you were in college? Or, if you?re currently in school, how does this match up with your university?s fitness facilities? ?Kristen

Facebook?s Payments Revenue Feels Some Heat, Declines 9% From Last Quarter

Screen Shot 2012-10-23 at 1.17.36 PMMirroring the pain that we're seeing across the entire social gaming industry as players shift toward mobile devices, Facebook's payments and fees revenue declined 9 percent quarter over quarter to $176 million from $192 million. The company may be up 13 percent year-over-year in payments revenue, but you can see a clear peak in this revenue stream happening over the first half of the year. Facebook says this figure may rebound this quarter because it's changing the way it recognizes payments revenue. Before, consumers had a month to dispute charges so payments revenue would actually be recording transactions that were at least a month old. This quarter, the company will record payments revenue as it happens, so there might be an artificial bump this quarter.

Top 10 Ecommerce Tips | Business 2 Community

Achieving success in the ecommerce world is very much like becoming successful in other business formats. Some of the necessary ingredients for building an online shopping cart site that is successful include determination, persistence, hard work, and careful attention to details. Before you decide that launching an online business venture is right for you, however, review these ten online?shopping cart tips.

Tip #1: Consider your company?s name. What is the best way to feature that name in the universal resource locator, or URL? (The URL is your company?s website address.) Often, your business?s exact name is no longer directly available as a URL. However, a slightly different version of it, or a version that uses your store and product name will likely be available for registration. This website address will be a key component of your advertising and marketing strategies, so choose it carefully.

?Tip #2: Develop a website for your web shopping cart that is easily navigated and attractive to customers. Use a design template, or consult with professionals to design a website that will accomplish both these objectives.

Tip #3: Invest in an online shopping cart solution or network storage solution that can be expanded when your store grows. In addition, choose one that best meets the needs of your ecommerce website. Some of the elements to evaluate include security of transaction data, reliability (how frequently the server crashes, and what volume of traffic the network or solution can manage), and specific functions offered by the solution. Also, search for shopping cart solutions that offer ecommerce business strategies.

Tip #4: Select merchant accounts for secure credit card and banking transactions that are designed especially for online shopping carts. Opt for an account that offers the capacity to accept, at minimum, the three most popular types of credit cards as well as Paypal. Evaluate accounts that also accept bank draft transactions.

Tip #5: Make the most of online shopping cart solutions that include ecommerce features such as dedicated email addresses and targeted mailing lists. These components can help your online retail business stand out among competitors, and further the enhancement of ecommerce business strategies designed to further differentiate and advance business branding.

Tip #6: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of ecommerce marketing strategies by using a specific promotional code for each strategy. By doing this, you will be able to identify which promotions are most effective.

Tip #7: Evaluate all of the text used on your ecommerce website to ensure that you are using terms that will result in effective search engine optimization. Select words that will offer the best search results for your business, and use these words carefully to obtain the highest possible search rankings. Doing this, and submitting the website for your business to top search engines will increase the probability that people shopping online for products will be directed to your online shopping cart.

Tip #8: When developing a website, choose a certain date to celebrate a Grand Opening ? or a reopening ? of your online store, if applicable. Then, promote specials that will be available on this date by targeted email advertising campaigns.

Tip #9: Schedule regular times and dates for website maintenance and redesigning. Remember to introduce and announce new elements in your shopping cart site design. Some of the features to include are feedback forms, blog sites, surveys, and polls.

Tip #10: Keep track of what online shopping cart tips work ? and be aware of the ecommerce tips that don?t work. Use web analytics to continuously monitor the ecommerce marketing strategies that customers find effective. Evaluate which of your pages might require design or text changes to encourage visitor traffic. After you have made these changes, be sure to inform your customers and regular visitors by

email that you have done so. Additionally, note the changes and updates you made to other pages on the website?s main page as well.

Utilizing these ten ecommerce tips, you can establish a successful Internet store, or further the success of an already-existing store. Begin by using these tips, and continue to update your virtual store and expand your business by following these guidelines.

Syrian regime and rebels constantly adapt arsenals

ALEPPO, Syria (AP) ? It was long past midnight, but the rebel commander couldn't sleep until his fighters returned from the Turkish border with the latest shipment of gear meant to help them battle the Syrian army. Wearing camouflage pants and black flip-flops, he waited anxiously, his eyes bloodshot.

In the morning, his team arrived with their prize: a single suitcase of night-vision goggles. For the first time, his brigade's snipers would be able to strike back at night against regime snipers who already have night-vision capabilities in the street-by-street fights for territory in the battleground city of Aleppo.

"We need one for every fighter," said the commander, Osama, who leads one of the rebel brigades fighting in Aleppo. Still, the small number in the shipment "is better than nothing. We will surprise the enemy when we start using them." He said the goggles were provided by a "sympathizer" in Europe, but refused to elaborate.

Piece by piece, Syria's rebels are slowly expanding their arsenal and getting their hands on more advanced weapons. The process still appears to be haphazard and improvised, far from the reliable, organized pipeline that rebels have sought for much of the 19-month-old uprising against the regime of President Bashar Assad. Instead, it often remains a scramble by individual units in the highly fragmented rebel forces to obtain what they can. Most units still rely on their staple arsenal of automatic weapons, hand grenades and rocket-propelled grenades, adapted to fit their needs.

But there have been notable advances. Most importantly, anti-aircraft missiles have made their first appearances in rebel hands in recent weeks, a weapon that some fighters boast could turn the tide against the regime.

Assad's forces have adapted too, although surprisingly they have at times turned more low-tech for the needs of urban warfare against guerrillas.

Rebel fighters say the most terrifying new regime weapons are cluster munitions, which scatter "bomblets" over a large area, and so-called "barrel" bombs. The latter are literally barrels packed with explosives, metal shards and sometimes fuel-soaked, igniting sand that are shoved out of helicopters or airplanes and can cause horrendous blasts and casualties.

Some analysts say the tactics adopted by Assad signal a military under strain. Although few expect the war to end soon, many say progressive changes in the sides' respective armories appear to favor the rebels in the long run.

"My sense is that the rebels are winning this war," said Jeffrey White, who studies Syria for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "They are winning by inches and the regime is doing its best to use its assets in innovative ways, but it is basically losing that fight."

Arms improvisation has been key to the rebel movement since it started months after the first protests of the anti-Assad uprising in March 2011. After deadly government crackdowns, civilians and army defectors took up arms to protect their towns and attack government troops.

The rebels have long asked sympathetic nations to arm them, complaining that they cannot get strong enough weapons to face Assad's powerful arsenal of tanks, artillery, mortars and warplanes. Though there have been reports of Persian Gulf nations funneling some arms, many rebel brigades say they have not received any such shipments. For most of the conflict, they have relied on smugglers and weapons captured from the Syrian military.

While he waited for his team to come back with the night-vision goggles last week, Commander Osama showed The Associated Press a sampling of the improvised armory his brigade of several hundred men has collected. Assault rifles hung from the walls, and bullets, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades sat in boxes nearby. Osama spoke on condition that he be identified only by his first name for fear of retaliation against his family.

One rifle had a telescopic sight crudely welded to its body to turn it into a sniper's rifle. His men bought the scopes separately for $150 each and assembled them to rifles.

"It's not really good, but we have to do what we can," he said.

He also showed a rocket-propelled grenade launcher that his men captured in a recent raid on an army garrison. It was a much larger caliber than the RPGs his men have and can disable the regime's most advanced tanks ? but only if the shooter gets within 400 meters (yards).

"That takes unbelievable courage," he said, because regime tanks on the move are closely guarded by snipers.

In what would be a significant advance, an official with the Free Syrian Army ? the rebel's loose umbrella group ? who is involved in procuring weapons said the rebels have now obtained dozens of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. Speaking to The AP in Turkey, he would not say who provided the rockets. He spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Several videos posted by anti-regime activists online last week show the missiles. In one video, an SA-7 launcher has been set on a rock to display it. Another shows a fighter in Aleppo firing one at a passing fighter jet, with the curly smoke trail of the rocket visible.

It remains unclear how many SA-7 missiles rebels have and if they can use them successfully. But "even if they don't bring anything down, it will make Syrian pilots think more about what they are doing," said White.

Reports of rebels shooting down regime aircraft have increased. Rebels claimed to have shot down at least two helicopters and two jets in August and September.

In the last week alone, however, amateur videos indicate they've shot down one jet and two helicopters. In one case, a video purported to show the capture of the jet pilot. In another, a rebel held up what he said was the head of another pilot, salvaged from the wreckage of his helicopter.

Other videos indicate that rebels have a growing number of heavy-caliber anti-aircraft guns, many mounted on pickup trucks for easy movement, as well as mortars and different kinds of homemade rockets.

The videos appeared consistent with other AP reporting.

From its side, Assad's regime has adjusted its professional military ? built to fight a war with Israel ? to fight guerrillas in Syrian cities.

Rebel fighters and activists say the "barrel bomb" is used nearly every day. On Saturday, an AP reporter visited a mosque in Aleppo that was hit by a barrel bomb three days earlier, killing at least 10 people: An annex to the mosque was razed, and the mosque itself and a half-dozen nearby apartment buildings nearby were severely damaged.

Amateur videos of barrel bombs that have failed to explode show them as large, metal containers filled with explosives and metal shards that are pushed manually from aircraft and detonate on impact with the ground. Some appear to be filled with sand soaked in fuel to cause huge fireballs.

One opposition activist in Aleppo said the barrel bombs don't seem to have tactical aims beyond killing as many people as possible. He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

Joseph Holliday, who studies Syria for the Institute for the Study of War said the bombs have a wide blast radius ? advantages when fighting rebels in an urban area. "The idea is to drop it on a building and try to get it to catch on fire," he said.

Human Rights Watch has also accused Syria of using cluster munitions, which it says endanger civilians. Syria does not comment on its military tactics, though it has denied using cluster munitions.

The question is whether the regime is resorting to such things out of intentional tactics or necessity. Mark Hiznay of Human Rights Watch said the use of barrel bombs could reflect regime difficultly in transporting munitions to air bases in the battle zones, forcing soldiers to build their own.

Holliday cited other ways the regime has adapted, such as using pro-government gunmen known as shabiha to supplement its infantry, which has been weakened by defections. In northern Syria, it has also used its slower L-39 training jets for airstrikes rather than its advanced MiGs.

This could be tactical, he said: flying slower makes it easier to target groups of gunmen on the ground.

Or it could reflect strain. The L-39s are easier to fly and maintain, suggesting that defections may have deprived Syria of pilots who can fly advanced aircraft or that the regime lacks parts to keep those jets in the sky.

Hiznay of Human Right Watch said Syria may be saving its more advanced aircraft for a worse-case scenario. "If there is a land force invasion, this stuff is optimized for killing tanks and armored vehicles."

Police: 1 jailed, 1 unhurt in Pa. chain saw attack

TURBOTVILLE, Pa. (AP) ? A Pennsylvania man is behind bars after police say he went after his housemate with a chain saw.

Seventy-six-year-old Guy Allen Black is being held on $100,000 bail after allegedly cutting through a door at the home he shared with Ronald Lee Tanner and swinging the chain saw at him.

State police say Black became irate after Tanner changed the locks on the home he owns in Turbotville, Northumberland County.

Black allegedly entered the house through the basement and used an ax and chain saw to cut through an interior door before chasing Tanner outside.

Investigators say the saw got stuck on Tanner's shirt and jammed, allowing Tanner to pin Black down with an umbrella.

Tanner was unhurt. It's not immediately clear if Black has an attorney.

Police Found Note Referencing DC Sniper In Apt. Of Slain Pregnant ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? The mystery surrounding the killing of a pregnant woman deepened Monday, as investigators looked into a strange note left at the scene and discovered that her fiance was still married to another woman.

The body of Vindalee Smith, 38, was found Saturday morning in a pool of blood, a gaping hole in her neck. She was eight months pregnant and expected to deliver the boy in about two weeks, but the fetus did not survive.

The death was ruled a homicide, but no arrests have been made.

Smith, a devout Seventh-Day Adventist, had been planning to marry Anthony Jackman on Sunday in a small ceremony at her church. Most of her friends said they had not known her fiance long, if at all, and some didn?t know his name.

But she could not have married Jackman legally because he has a wife in New Jersey. Police said the two are estranged, with Jackman living with his mother during the week and the wife living in their former home. A message left at the house believed to belong to the couple and one left at the home believed to belong to his mother were not immediately returned Monday.

Jackman was among friends and family interviewed by police. He was released, though police said no one has been cleared as a suspect.

Investigators discovered a bizarre typed note in the woman?s apartment referencing the 2002 Washington sniper case that read: ?I will kill 1 pregnant woman a month starting now until Lee Boyd Malvo is set free!? It was signed ?the apprentice? with a smiley face.

It?s not clear what, if any, relevance the note had to the death of Smith. Investigators are trying to determine whether it represented legitimate evidence or a ruse meant to throw them off track.

Malvo?was 17 when he went on the cross-country killing spree with John Allen Muhammad. The pair was linked to 27 shootings across the country, including 10 fatal attacks in the Washington area. Malvo is serving a life sentence with no parole in Virginia. Muhammad was executed in Virginia in 2009.

Malvo testified that a second phase of the plan included shooting a pregnant woman.

Smith, who has four other children in their teens and 20s, had been living in a basement apartment in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn and had recently moved in. Police said there was no sign of forced entry, and no weapon was recovered.

It?s not clear whether Jackman was the father of her unborn child.

Smith had joined the her church about three years ago, said Andrew Connor, a deacon.

?She was dedicated to her family,? he said. ?She was beautiful and this is very surreal.?

Testing Interest

Hey there!

Right now I'm testing to see how many people would be interested in a Halo RP. With Halo 4 right around the corner I expect a lot of Halo fans to be excited and maybe willing to participate in a Halo RP.

As a fan, and not a buff, I will need a Co-GM who knows Halo like the back of their hand to help me get facts, details and locations to be as accurate as possible for the RP. If I'm going to make an RP based on the Halo franchise, I want it to be as authentic to the original material as possible so that fans and buffs alike could participate and enjoy the experience.

That being said, again this post is just a test to see how many people would be interested in an RP of this nature.

The basic idea of the RP would take place right after the events of Halo Reach. A team of SPARTANS, designated Itsoh Team (in partial reference to the Navajo Indian word for "Wolf"), is en route to *insert planet here* to try and contain a Covenant takeover operation. As we progress through the RP we'll encounter more and more Covenant forces as well as the Flood on other planets.

Again, I'll need a Co-GM who knows Halo very well in order to make this fun. Though the basic idea for the story is rather simple, there's going to be A LOT of combat and stress for us to go through together so buckle up and prepare for head throbbing and stomach churning action!

So do I have your attention yet?

If I can find four players to say they're interested on this thread then I will create the RP. If you are interested please describe for me your experience with Halo so that I know who to choose for a Co-GM from those who show up here.

Thanks for your time, and I hope that I can find a few people willing to help me get this started!

How a fish 'broke' a law of physics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? Silvery fish such as herring, sardine and sprat are breaking a basic law of physics, according to new research from the University of Bristol published October 21 in Nature Photonics.

Reflective surfaces polarize light, a phenomenon that fishermen or photographers overcome by using polarizing sunglasses or polarizing filters to cut our reflective glare. However, PhD student Tom Jordan and his supervisors Professor Julian Partridge and Dr Nicholas Roberts in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences found that these silvery fish have overcome this basic law of reflection -- an adaptation that may help them evade predators.

Previously, it was thought that the fish's skin -- which contains "multilayer" arrangements of reflective guanine crystals -- would fully polarize light when reflected. As the light becomes polarized, there should be a drop in reflectivity.

The Bristol researchers found that the skin of sardines and herring contain not one but two types of guanine crystal -- each with different optical properties. By mixing these two types, the fish's skin doesn't polarize the reflected light and maintains its high reflectivity.

Dr Roberts said: "We believe these species of fish have evolved this particular multilayer structure to help conceal them from predators, such as dolphin and tuna. These fish have found a way to maximize their reflectivity over all angles they are viewed from. This helps the fish best match the light environment of the open ocean, making them less likely to be seen."

As a result of this ability, the skin of silvery fish could hold the key to better optical devices. Tom Jordan said: "Many modern day optical devices such as LED lights and low loss optical fibres use these non-polarizing types of reflectors to improve efficiency. However, these human-made reflectors currently require the use of materials with specific optical properties that are not always ideal. The mechanism that has evolved in fish overcomes this current design limitation and provides a new way to manufacture these non-polarizing reflectors."

Trevor Cook: Time to rethink unions ALP connection

Cook_homeThis article was originally published in worksite, a website produced by the work and organisational studies centre at the University of Sydney.

Structure is destiny. Organisational structure is often overlooked in discussions about the future of the ALP. Yet, structure heavily influences candidate selection and therefore parliamentary leadership. In an increasingly presidential style electoral system, how caucus is chosen, and its composition, could scarcely be more important. Further, structure shapes the relationship between the party and the broader community. The ALP's model of union affiliation, the defining characteristic of labour parties, made sense in a blue-collar past. Now it is a cause of a growing disconnect between the ALP and other sections of the Australian community.

This thesis presents a case study of the impact of union revitalisation on weakening links between unions and social democratic (including labour) parties. It covers the national relationship between unions and the Australian Labor Party (ALP) over the period from 1996 to 2010. This period includes two remarkable episodes: the Prices and Incomes Accord between the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the ALP, which was a feature of the Hawke and Keating Governments from 1983 to 1996; and, the Your Rights at Work (YR@W) campaign conducted by the ACTU, from 2005 to 2007, against the Howard Government's WorkChoices legislation.?

I argue that the national unions-ALP relationship has undergone a partial transformation towards greater independence, but has not (yet) been able to find a sustainable balance between the dependence of the social democratic type of unions-party relationships and the independence of the pressure group type.?

Affiliation is the major institutional feature of social democratic unions-party relationships that distinguishes them from the pressure group type. Affiliation strengthens the links between unions and political parties by facilitating union influence over party policy and public office candidate selection. Affiliation privileges unions over other social groupings seeking to influence political parties. In the pressure group type, the political exchange between unions and political parties is less certain. Union movements have generally achieved better policy outcomes through affiliation than without it; that is, other things being equal, internal lobbying is a superior political strategy for unions than external lobbying.?

Union movements in Western countries are using pressure group tactics, often borrowed from unions in the United States of America (USA) and premised on political independence, to augment the declining political resources they traditionally derived from high union densities and close associations with political parties. The Australian union movement was an early adopter of this approach.

The desire to adopt a more independent stance also reflects changing union member and voter attitudes that now place little value in the traditional relationship between unions and the ALP. The modern ALP places little value on union contributions to policy development, usually ranking them alongside the contributions of other pressure groups.?

Conversely, union members are increasingly suspicious about the value of the unions-ALP relationship and often prefer to see their organisations fighting outside the tent rather than playing the 'insider game'. Campaigning, the ACTU leadership also believes, based on US experience, is the way to recruit and retain members.

Two types of unions-party relationship co-exist at the national level in Australia. There is a receding social democratic type relationship characterised by the dependence of unions on the ALP; and, there is an emerging pressure group type relationship which is premised on the independence of the union movement and the capacity of both unions and the ALP to broaden their engagements with like-minded community organisations and, in the case of the ACTU, other political parties.?

A politically important contradiction has resulted from this co-existence of two relationship types because the social democratic relationship is characterised by 'restraint and quiet influence' (i.e. the insider game of deals between leadership elites) and the pressure group type is characterised by the 'generally adversarial nature of membership activism' and high-profile public campaigns targeted at both ALP and conservative governments.

Unions and the ALP seek to manage this contradiction by maintaining a balance between dependence and independence. Many interviewees spoke of the need to 'get the balance right' and to be able to position the relationship as neither too close nor too distant. This balance is also identified by terms like 'maturity', and by claims that the national unions-ALP relationship has evolved in ways, and to an extent, not found elsewhere. The need for a balance between dependence and independence has fostered a cherry-picking approach premised on a belief that useable bits of the American pressure group type approach can be plugged into an existing social democratic relationship.?

The contradiction between independence and dependence was not obvious during the YR@W campaign when the ALP was in opposition, but the ACTU has had considerable difficulty in maintaining the momentum for its union revitalisation campaigns; and, the perception prevalent among union members that the ACTU was running a pro-ALP campaign during the 2010 federal election contributed to the failure of the union movement to have a significant impact in the 2010 election campaign.

The ALP retains an affiliation model that privileges a small number of traditional unions at the expense of other unions and social groupings. The ALP's largest affiliated union, the SDA (retail), has just 230,000 members (less than the number of voters in two federal electorates) and 8 of its former officials sit in the 103 member federal caucus; twice as many as the ACTU contingent. The ANF (nursing) has more members than the SDA and none of its former officials are in the FPLP (caucus). Nearly half (49 of 103) of the federal caucus have full-time union official backgrounds, the number with full-time experience in the community organisations the ALP would like to engage with can be easily counted on the fingers of two hands.

Despite often stated ambitions to do so, there is little evidence that unions and the ALP have been able to broaden their links with community organisations beyond the narrowing base of blue collar unions. The full transition from dependence to independence has yet to be made.

Pippa Middleton party planning book: Celebrate. A Year - BelleNews

Now ? in her new party-planning book Celebrate. A Year of Festivities for Family and Friends ? Pippa Middleton has acknowledged the ?startling? reality that she has achieved worldwide fame because Kate married Prince William and because of the unexpected focus on her bottom.

Pippa Middleton, 29, admits: ?It is a bit startling to achieve global recognition before the age of 30 on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom.

?One day I might be able to make sense of this. In the meantime I think it?s fair to say that it has its upside and its downside.

?I certainly have opportunities many can only dream of ? but in most ways I?m a typical girl in her 20s trying to forge a career and represent herself in what can sometimes seem rather strange circumstances.

?I am by nature an optimist so I tend to concentrate on the advantages.

?One of the most attractive has been the chance to publish [this book] Celebrate.?

Celebrate: A Year Of British Festivities For Families And Friends is party-planner Pippa Middleton?s guide to home entertaining and goes on sale at the end of this month.

In Celebrate, Pippa Middleton acknowledges the effect her sister the Duchess of Cambridge?s fame will have on sales, saying: ?I know many of you will pick up the book out of nothing more than curiosity.

?[But] I can assure you that it feels even stranger to me than it probably does to you to have seen so much written about me when I have done so little to paint a picture of myself.

?This is my first chance to do that and I?ve enjoyed every minute of it.

?The book is designed to be a comprehensive guide to home entertaining, based on my experience in my family?s business Party Pieces and work for London-based events company Table Talk.?

Pippa Middleton party planning book, Celebrate A Year of Festivities for Family and Friends

Last year it was revealed that Pippa Middleton ? whose previous literary experience includes writing the online newsletter Party Times for the family?s business ? had secured an almost unprecedented ?400,000 ($620,000) deal for the book with publisher Michael Joseph.

Pippa Middleton?s recipes are accompanied by glossy pictures of the author along with a selection of anecdotes recalling her childhood growing up with Kate in Bucklebury, Berkshire.

Talking about Bonfire Night, Pippa Middleton says: ?The unique sights, sounds, smells and tastes make this festival a particularly evocative one.

?I remember the noise of the bells ringing at school as the effigy of Guy Fawkes we?d prepared earlier was carried out on a canvas stretcher, hoisted on to the huge bonfire and set alight.

?Then the revelry would begin.

?My school friends and I would all have sparklers we passed around, lighting one from another.?

Pippa Middleton also reminisces about playing conkers at school: ?We all used to get really competitive. The trick was to paint clear nail varnish on the conkers to make them very tough and less likely to break ? outrageous cheating of course!?

Iraqi officials: Gunmen kill 3 people in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi police officials say attacks by gunmen in Baghdad have left three people dead, including two policemen.

The officials say one attack took place early Saturday when gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing two policemen and wounding another.

In downtown Karradah, gunmen on Friday night attacked the house of a police lieutenant colonel who worked with the State Identity Directorate, killing him, the officials added.

Health officials at nearby hospitals confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Violence has ebbed in Iraq since the peak of the bloodletting in 2005-2008, but insurgents still frequently attack government officials and security forces in an attempt to undermine the Shiite-led government.

Serbia, Kosovo leaders meet for first time at EU

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union on Friday mediated the first official talks between the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo, the bitter Balkan rivals, and the Serbian prime minister said he is ready for a "historic compromise."

EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said she first met separately with Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, then chaired a joint meeting. We "will meet again soon ... to improve the lives of people and help solve problems and, in so doing, bring Serbia and Kosovo closer to the European Union," Ashton said.

Kosovo, which is predominantly ethnic Albanian, declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Serbia has said it will never recognize the independence of its former province, which it considers the cradle of its statehood and Christian Orthodox religion.

Serbia spent much of the 1990s ostracized and isolated from the EU after Serbian autocrat Slobodan Milosevic started wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. In 1999, NATO bombed Serbia to stop the war in Kosovo, forcing Serbia to relinquish control there.

Today, the EU is setting the normalization of relations with Kosovo as the main condition for continuing Serbia's membership negotiations with the bloc. But Kosovo's Serb-populated north has remained a flashpoint of the troubles in the Balkans because hardline Serbs there do not acknowledge the authority of Kosovo's central government.

"We believe the time has come to reach a historic compromise," Dacic said after Friday's meeting. "We are ready for talks, even about the final status of Kosovo."

But he also said the talks should not "result in a one-sided recognition of Kosovo's independence."

"We are ready to talk about the position of the Serbian people (in Kosovo), protection of church heritage, war crimes, organ trafficking, the missing, Serb property and the return of refugees to Kosovo," Dacic said.

A statement from Thaci's office said the meeting will clear the path for the two countries to eventually join the EU, and "serve peace and stability in the region."

Kosovo authorities welcomed the meeting.

"It is very good that (the) very first high-level meeting between the prime minister of the republic of Kosovo and the republic of Serbia was held on equal basis," Arber Vllahiu, the spokesman for Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga told The Associated Press.

Ashton said she firmly believes the dialogue is in the interest of both sides.

Dacic said the next meeting between the two prime ministers is scheduled in November.

Huge car bomb blast in Beirut kills at least eight

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A huge car bomb exploded in central Beirut during rush hour on Friday, killing eight people, wounding about 80 and raising fears of renewed sectarian violence in a country still scarred from a long civil war.

The explosion did not appear to target any political figure in Lebanon's divided community but it occurred at a time of heightened tension between Lebanese factions on opposite sides of the conflict in neighboring Syria.

It ripped through the street where the office of the anti-Damascus Christian Phalange Party is located near Sassine Square in Ashrafiyeh, a mostly Christian area.

Phalange leader Sami al-Gemayel, a staunch opponent of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and a member of parliament, condemned the attack.

"Let the state protect the citizens. We will not accept any procrastination in this matter, we cannot continue like that. We have been warning for a year. Enough," said Gemayel, whose brother was assassinated in November 2006.

The war in Syria, which has killed 30,000 people in the past 19 months, has pitted mostly Sunni insurgents against Assad, who is from the Alawite sect linked to Shi'ite Islam.

Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those supporting Assad and those backing the rebels trying to overthrow him.

The blast occurred during rush hour, when many parents were picking up children from school, and sent black smoke billowing into the sky.

Eight people were killed and at least 78 were wounded, the state news agency said, quoting civil defense officials.

Several cars were destroyed and the front of a multi-storey building was badly damaged, with tangled wires and metal railings crashing to the ground.

In the aftermath, residents ran about in panic looking for relatives while others helped carry the wounded to ambulances. Security forces blanketed the area.

In scenes reminiscent of the dark days of Lebanon's civil war, ambulances ferried the wounded to several hospitals, where doctors, nurses and students waited for casualties at the doors. At one hospital, an elderly woman sat in the emergency room with blood staining her blouse.

The hospitals put out an appeal for blood donations.

An employee of a bank on the street pointed to the blown-out windows of his building.

"Some people were wounded from my bank. I think it was a car bomb. The whole car jumped five floors into the air," he said.

Michael Fish, 25, a British musician visiting Beirut, said he was in his hotel a street away when the explosion happened.

"At first I thought it was an earthquake. It shook the whole hotel for a second. I ran down and started filming on my iPhone."

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said in a statement the government was trying to find out who carried out the attack and said the perpetrators would be punished.

The prospect that Syria's war might spread to Lebanon has worried many people here, and fighting broke out in February between supporters and opponents of Assad in the northern city of Tripoli.

Syria has also played a major role in Lebanese politics, siding with different factions during the 1975-1990 civil war. It deployed troops in Beirut and parts of the country during the war and stayed until 2005.

In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoabie told reporters: "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them."

Tension between Sunnis, Shi'ites and Christians in Lebanon has continued after the civil war but has increased since the Syria conflict erupted.

Sunni-Shi'te rivalry hit a peak when former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, a Sunni, was killed in 2005. Hariri supporters accused Syria and then Hezbollah of killing him - a charge they both deny. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder.

Hezbollah's political opponents, who have for months accused it of aiding Assad's forces, have warned that its involvement in Syria could reignite the sectarian tension of the civil war.

The last bombing in Beirut was in 2008 when three people were killed in an explosion which damaged a U.S. diplomatic car.

Harahan seeks cyber-crimes unit to catch online sex predators ...

Harahan moved Thursday night to establish its own cyber-crimes unit in the Police Department, hoping to catch online sexual predators who target children in the city of 9,277. The City Council voted 5-0 to request help setting up the unit from the Kenner Police Department, which started one in 2006.

Online solicitation of children in Harahan has not been known to be a problem, but Councilwoman Dana Huete said the potential is real. "With advanced technology now, our kids have iPads and iPhones, and we can't always police what they're doing," said Huete, who sponsored the resolution.

Harahan has no money earmarked for the project, but Huete said it will seek a grant. Police Chief Mac Dickinson likely will assign an officer to work part-time on cyber-crime, she said.

Kenner police have made more than 50 arrests since starting their cyber-crimes unit six years ago, often using an officer posing online as an underaged girl. The suspects have been as near as Kenner and as far away as California and England, said Sgt. Robert McGraw, who staffs the Kenner unit.

"Just remember every time you're child logs online, there are people all over the world looking to solicit them for sex," he said.

With Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen fight on the horizon, fighters wonder if smack tack prowess is more important

Chael Sonnen is a good fighter, but he's a masterful smack talker. There is no one in the UFC, including president Dana White, who can sell a fighter better than middleweight-challenger-turned-light-heavyweight-challenger Chael Sonnen. He proved that as he goaded UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones into a season coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" and a title fight.

It didn't matter that Jones had a more qualified contender waiting in Dan Henderson, or that Forrest Griffin was already preparing for his December bout with Sonnen. The fight went to Sonnen, the man who could pull in the biggest ratings on a stale show and the biggest dollars on a pay-per-view.

This has fighters wondering if they should be in the gym training or at an improv class, working on their smack talking skills. Henderson tweeted:

I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to [expletive] talking school.?@danawhite

Griffin wondered the same when talking to "UFC Tonight."

"I'm not mad at him," Griffin said, referencing Sonnen. "Why fight your way to the top when you can talk your way to the top?"

Who can blame them? They've worked for years in the gym and in fights to get the fights they wanted, but a middleweight stepped in front of him because of his mouth. On a press Wednesday, White said it made sense.

"Basically Jon Jones is out until April. He's going to be sitting around for months anyway unable to fight. So it made sense for him to do The Ultimate Fighter. And everyone has been talking about this fight with Chael so it made sense for them to do TUF and then fight," White said.

Hear that? White said the fight was made because people were talking about it, not because Sonnen earned it. Every fighter on the UFC's payroll should take notice. Talking will earn you a fight when your skills cannot.

First Person: Love and the Presidential Election

Yahoo News asked voters in politically split relationships to share what it's like to support one presidential candidate when their significant others don't. Here's one voter's story.

FIRST PERSON | Being a 21-year-old Democratic in Philadelphia -- the city of arts, independence and brotherly love -- comes as naturally as breathing. But being that person and being in a relationship with a 21-year-old Republican isn't always so easy.

I'm an avid supporter of President Obama, while my boyfriend, Ramon, supports Mitt Romney. Since the start of our relationship, we haven't exactly seen eye-to-eye on all things political. For example, I'm pro-choice and Ramon is pro-life. My major concerns are women's issues, while Ramon is more concerned about the economy.

There are some things we do agree on, like the need for education reform and more green jobs, but there aren't many. Because one of us usually becomes annoyed with the other during political conversations, we typically avoid the subject altogether. We decided not to watch debates together or try to change each other's minds. With this presidential race, however, avoiding politics at home can be difficult. In the past couple of months, we've been talking about the presidential race much more than we'd like to.

Just last week, after a long day of hearing my coworkers' political opinions (some of which irritated me beyond words), I took all of my bottled-up comments and railed them at Ramon.

"Why are you voting for Romney?" I asked.

"You really want to talk about this?" he replied, shaking his head.

He laughed. I was infuriated; I didn't find it one bit funny.

Naturally, I yelled, "It's not funny! Don't you care about me and my rights as a woman?! I can't believe you're such a conservative! I might as well be with a 90-year-old!"

Ramon walked over to me and kissed me on the forehead. "Please don't leave me for a 90-year-old," he jokingly pleaded.

I mustered up the meanest look I could and shot it right at him, though I felt myself succumbing to his adorable attitude.

"Look," he continued, "I have my reasons for voting for Romney, like you have your reasons for voting for Obama. It's nothing against you or other women, and you know that."

Deep down, I did know his strongest reasons for voting Republican were his economic concerns, so I said nothing.

"I love you even if you are a liberal," he said. With a resigned tone, I replied, "I know. I love you too -- even if you're not 90."

Google Android Event - Business Insider

Google just sent out invites to the press for an Android-themed event in New York.

The announcement will likely be for Google's new Nexus phone, which is rumored to be made by LG. It's also possible Google will team up with other hardware manufacturers to make Nexus devices this year. The LG Nexus is said to be a variant of the LG Optimus G, which recently launched.

Finally, there are rumors Google will offer a new Nexus 7 model with 32 GB. The entry-level 16 GB Nexus 7 could also drop to $99 from $199.

Android Boss Andy Rubin is also scheduled to speak at AllThingsD's mobile conference following Google's press conference. We're guessing he'll use that opportunity to show off the new Android hardware.

Even more interesting, Microsoft is holding a press conference the same day to announce the final consumer-facing features for its next mobile operating system Windows Phone 8.

Are we killing the diving industry in the UK?

Another categoric "No".

Like any hobby, you have those who participate on an occasional basis and are quite happy to dive to 30m with a single tank and have no aspirations to go deeper. You have those who are a bit "keener" and will continue to develop their diving in a way that suits them, Nitrox, decompression, helium and the like and these divers enjoy the extra complexity, to them it is all part of their interest.

I am often surprised by comments that our Club is a "Techie" Club - nothing could be further from the truth. We have many more single tank divers that tech divers, but, as is usually the case, it is the keener, verging on obsessional divers that are on the boat each week, on the forums during the week and who are more prominent that those who dive perhaps a dozen times a year at most.

We cater for both easily, the technical divers are just as happy in 25-30m with twins and a stage of O2 spending an hour or more on the dive as those with a single 12 and a 30 minute bottom time. "Technical" does not have to mean "Deep".

I honestly think that there is a large (and growing) demand for Technical diving in the UK and abroad. After all, if PADI's "Tech-Rec" courses are anything to go by, they think so too!
