Insiders claim that Sony is to abandon the traditional DualShock controller, instead opting for one with an LCD screen and biometric sensors.
The rumours come from unnamed sources speaking to CVG, who claim that the PlayStation 4?s controller has already gone through numerous versions ?few of which resemble the DualShock?.
It?s said that versions of the new controller include biometric sensors on the grips and a LCD touchscreen. Although there?s no claim that this is the version that Sony will go for.
A second, equally unnamed, source says that Sony is ?trying to emulate the same user interface philosophies as the PS Vita?. Which could imply a rear touchpad as well.
All of this matches surprisingly neatly with a patent Sony registered last year and which describes a controller with identical features, and which looks suspiciously like a Wii U GamePad.
Although PlayStation controllers have always looked the same the original one did not have any analogue sticks. Instead the first DualShock wasn?t released until 1997, as a reaction to the Nintendo 64?s analogue controller.
The DualShock has enjoyed minor upgrades over the years, including the addition, removal, and reinstatement of force feedback ? as well as Sixaxis motion controls. The only time Sony has come close to redesigning the actual shape though is the above ?boomerang? controller, displayed at the PlayStation 3?s unveiling in 2005 but never seen again.
What exactly the biometric controls will do is not clear, but Valve is also keen on using the technology in their much rumoured new controller. Theoretically biometrics allows the controller to gauge your heart rate, stress level, and muscle response although they?ve never been used in a mass market controller.
Nintendo prominently featured the Wii Vitality Sensor at E3 2009, which used biometric sensors, but it was never released, apparently due to a lack of reliability. Ubisoft also had a very similar looking device planned but that too also failed to materialise.
