WHAT?S IN A NAME? Definitions for sport fish and game fish don?t exist yet, but here?s what was presented as possibilities: ? Game fish: No or limited commercial harvest; no or limited sale; and hook-and-line gear only. Species currently up for consideration are redfish and snook. ? Sport fish: No commercial harvest; no sale; hook-and-line gear only; and no recreational harvest (catch-and-release only). Species currently up for consideration are bonefish, permit and tarpon. Wildlife Conservation officials look to protect tarpon ? By JOSH OLIVE? ?? WATERLINE PUBLISHER ? ?? The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission took an important step Thursday toward ensuring that tarpon and other popular game fish will be given legal status that will protect them for future generations of anglers.? ?? Although the discussion at the Tampa meeting was just a preliminary pitch of an idea that has yet to be fully formed, the notion of two new designations for saltwater fish ? game fish and sport fish ? was sufficiently interesting to draw more than a dozen people to speak before the commissioners.? Basically, the new designations will be about preventing the ? exploitation of fish that are more valuable alive than dead. Rather than managing these species for a biological threshold of the number that survive to spawn (the way it?s usually done), these fish would be managed for abundance in an effort to maintain Florida?s edge as a world-class fishing destination.http://scc.eed.sunnewspapers.net/olive/ode/charlotte_sun/? __________________ "All good fishermen stay young until they die, for fishing is the only dream of youth that doth not grow stale with age." Tarpon Regulation Discussions set to OccurPosted on September 6, 2012The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will begin discussing potential changes to tarpon regulations at their September 6 meeting in Tampa.? Currently, tarpon may only be ?possessed? by a guide or angler who has purchased a $50 tarpon tag. ?Possession ranges from harvesting a tarpon for IGFA World Record submission to towing a tarpon to weigh stations during a tournament.? In an effort to bring Florida?s fisheries regulations in line with other sport-fish destinations, new designations are being discussed for Florida?s recreational fisheries. Designation One ? ?Sportfish? ? species in this category would be catch and release only, no harvest.? Proposed species in this category are tarpon, bonefish, sailfish. Designation Two ? ?Gamefish? ? species in this category would be recreational harvest only within regulations, with no commercial harvest allowed.? Proposed species in this category are snook and redfish. As discussions unfold on this topic, we are interested in hearing from you. What do you think about tarpon becoming catch and release only in Florida? ?Please let us know your thoughts by emailing info@tarbone.org.
FWIW, I support moving Tarpon to Sportfish status -- end the tarpon tag. __________________ Team NTB "The night time is the right time"

Personally, I think this is a good move.? I am sure others will disagree and that's ok too.?? Overall there are some fish that the dollars to the economy in recreation exceed the value to the market for harvest.? What we need to be careful of is making sure this is not a subtle way to start banning fishing etc.? I am NOT a conspiracy theory person, BUT this is one way it could start.? Overall the way it is being proposed above I support. __________________ The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing. ~Babylonian Proverb

None of the fish listed in have ANY commercial component. This is not about stopping commercial harvest, but rather managing a set of species for MAXIMUM population because of their status as highly sought after gamefish rather than managing for SUSTAINABILITY or 'yield'. This is a new direction for FWC, as generally fish are managed on a basis of sustainable harvest. ? I attended the meeting and spoke on behalf of SavetheTarpon.com with regards to this, and I can tell you that there is no intent to "ban fishing." ?This proposal was brought by Chairman Wright who is an avid outdoorsman and sportfishermen. ?His intent, as he stated, is to make Florida a top sportfishin destination in the world by managing these species for maximum abundance. Its an interesting concept and I stand behind it 100%.? We often like to think of Florida as very progressive with its protections of natural resources, but in fact when it comes to protecting valuable SPORT fish (we are not talking commercial vs. recreational) we are in the dark ages compared to other destinations of our caliber. Remember this proposal is to manage these species in such a way as to increase the availability and quality of sportfishing. ?I dont see any move from sport fish to no fish. __________________ Capt. I'm all for no tags for Tarpon. No or limited commercial harvest; no or limited sale; and hook-and-line gear only. Species currently up for consideration are redfish and snook? Certainly wouldn't be in favor of this. Wouldn't be in favor of Permit being removed from recreational harvest. __________________ MudflatMark the Anglingarchitect
