Huff: Community supports paying $15,000 for Facebook jobs

The community is behind the Joplin R-8 Administration's decision to pay $15,000 in $1,000 stipends for people to update the Facebook pages at each school, according to Superintendent C. J. Huff

In a posting on the KSNF website, Huff explained the reasons the positions were added:
Each school will have a point person to keep the pages current.?
"So that parents get the most up to date information about what's happening inside those schools," said Dr. Huff.?
Administrators claim having someone on the inside is the best way to communicate.?
"The information that gets posted is best posted on the local level, at the school building level. Having a way to not only communicate internally with the building but externally with their parents," said Dr. Huff.?
Each communicator will be paid an extra thousand dollars for their work. Administrators say the community supports the board's decision to reestablish the positions.

California climber falls to death in Glacier

WEST GLACIER, Mont. --?

Glacier National Park officials say a 21-year-old California man died after falling at least 60 feet from a mountain he was climbing.

Park officials said in a statement that rangers recovered the body of Matthew Needham of Simi Valley on Thursday near Grinnell Point in the northeastern area of the park.

Needham was climbing the mountain with two others when he fell in a steep, rocky area. All three climbers worked at the Many Glacier Hotel.

After receiving reports of the fall from a Glacier Park Boat Company employee and a group of hikers, rangers in a helicopter found Needham's body.

They used a 100-foot line to recovery the body.

Park officials say the death is under investigation.

Dwight Howard, from Superman to Rocket Man

HOUSTON (AP) ? Dwight Howard has a new team and catchy new nickname.

"He's not Superman anymore. He's Rocket Man now," longtime Rockets broadcaster Bill Worrell said Saturday as he introduced the team's major free agent acquisition.

As Howard took the stage and greeted several Houston officials including owner Leslie Alexander and coach Kevin McHale, a couple of his new teammates playfully repeated his new moniker ? 'Rocket Man, Rocket Man' ? and were met with a huge, toothy smile from Howard.

"It means a lot to me just to have a fresh start and have an opportunity to write my own story," Howard said. "I don't think people understood the fact that I got traded to L.A., and now I had a chance to really choose my own destiny, and this is the place where I chose and I'm happy about it."

The Rockets gave him a four-year deal worth about $88 million, a year less and far below the $118 million the Lakers could have offered.

The center was formally introduced in Houston on Saturday after spurning the Lakers to sign with the Rockets. He was greeted by some of the brightest stars in team history.

Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon and Yao Ming were among those on hand to celebrate Howard's signing. Also joining the party were Ralph Sampson, Clyde Drexler and Elvin Hayes.

He will be the latest in a storied line of centers to play for the Rockets. He has long worked with Olajuwon to improve his game, and "The Dream" was among the contingent that flew to Los Angeles to woo him into joining the Rockets.

Olajuwon didn't shy away from raving about his student.

"He is the missing piece where he can really bring the team to a championship contender," he said.

Howard joins a team starring James Harden that reached the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and battled back from a 3-0 deficit before being eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6.

General manager Daryl Morey, who led the effort to land Howard, is excited about upgrading his team and knows this puts the Rockets among the preseason favorites to contend for a championship.

"I think it absolutely gives us a chance," he said. "What you do this job for is to have a chance. The reality is five to seven teams have a chance any given year. The way it is in this league, you've got to have multiple All-Stars, you generally have to have dominant top players and we have two guys that we think are in the top 10 in the league in James and Dwight."

Howard was traded from Orlando to the Lakers in a four-team trade that also included Philadelphia and Denver last year. He recovered from back surgery last season and averaged 17.1 points and 12.4 rebounds

His one season in Los Angeles was filled with unrest, including an admission that there were times that he wasn't having fun and what many believed to be a less than positive relationship with Kobe Bryant

The Rockets believe that will change in Houston.

"If you can be a great player and can't be happy, what difference does it make? He'll be very happy here," Alexander said. "Dwight recognizes that his boyhood dreams will come true as a Rocket."

Yao made a call to Howard to help recruit the 27-year-old player to Houston. As the most recent star center to play for the Rockets, Yao is eager to see Howard take the team to "the next level."

"I feel so happy that he chose the Rockets and I feel the Rockets will be the best fitting team for him because we have such a great, rich history of big men," Yao said.

Howard is perfectly happy dealing with lofty expectations from outsiders because he believes he should control the game every time he sets foot on the court.

"That's what I've always expected out of myself," he said. "Before I got injured, that's what I did every night ? I dominated the game on both ends of the floor. It's not about putting up big numbers, none of that; the biggest thing is just going out there and having fun and dominating and that's what I'm going to do."

Of all the people the Rockets enlisted to help lure Howard to Houston, the star admitted that his new teammate Chandler Parsons made the biggest impact.

"Chandler is probably the guy you should really thank," Howard said. "He's been blowing my phone up every day. He's been great."

Howard couldn't pinpoint one thing Parsons said that helped sway his decision, but noted that they had numerous conversations about Houston's great team chemistry and the feeling of family.

Parsons, a second-round pick in 2011 who has developed into a solid starter, said he tried to sell Howard on the idea of winning.

"I just told him: 'We're going to be really good without you, we're going to win games without you. Come make us great,'" he said.

The Rockets also got a push in a rather random way.

Howard was in Aspen, Colo., while mulling his options and prayed for a sign of what he should do.

"I believe in signs ... and when I was in Aspen it seemed like everybody I met was from Houston," he said. "I just had a good feeling in my soul about everything, the direction of the team, and just had a great feeling about what they were trying to accomplish."

Though his nickname got switched on Saturday, the Rockets unveiled a Superman-inspired marketing campaign this week that features a man's torso with hands ripping back a suit to reveal a red shirt that says 'Rockets,' above their slogan 'A New Age.'

That picture along with several other shots flashed on a video screen above the stage during Saturday's introduction.

After he was done speaking with reporters, Howard and the other Rockets' stars made their way outside where the street in front of the Toyota Center was blocked off for a rally to allow fans to welcome him to Houston.

Power Ranking Every NBA Team's Starting 5 Next Season

PG: Lou Williams (pending outcome of Jeff Teague situation)?

SG: DeMarre Carroll?

SF: Kyle Korver?

PF: Paul Millsap

C: Al Horford

We knew the Atlanta Hawks would likely to go in a new direction this summer, and that's exactly what they've done.?

Jeff Teague may be on his way out the door after signing an offer sheet with the Milwaukee Bucks, while Paul Millsap was signed to fill the void left by Josh Smith. And the Millsap signing was a stroke of genius from Danny Ferry.?

Getting a player of Millsap's caliber on a two-year, $19 million deal is extraordinary, and should keep the Hawks on the back end of the playoff conversation in the Eastern Conference this season.?

While the point guard situation figures to play itself out in the coming days, another position of need for the Hawks is shooting guard.?

Demarre Carroll was signed to add depth on the wing, and while he's a more natural fit at the 3, he's the only logical candidate to pencil in at the 2 for the time being. With ample cap space, look for the Hawks to add a veteran who can slot in at shooting guard, pushing Carroll into a role off the bench.?

Nigerian activists protest visit by Sudan leader

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Human rights activists are threatening to go to court to demand that Nigeria arrest Sudan President Omar al-Bashir if he makes a planned visit.

It would be al-Bashir's first visit to Nigeria since the International Criminal court indicted him in 2009 for genocide and war crimes in Darfur.

Chino Obiagwu of the Nigerian Coalition for the ICC said they would go to court to force officials to fulfill Nigeria's commitment as an ICC member.

Sudan's official radio said al-Bashir will visit Nigeria Sunday to attend an African Union summit. The 53-nation organization has urged members not to arrest al-Bashir. Some Africans accuse the ICC of racism in targeting Africans.

Nigerian officials did not respond to requests for comment.

Several African countries have avoided visits by al-Bashir because of the controversy.

Matt Mitrione?s injury forces him out of fight with Brendan Schaub at UFC on Fox 8

Remember that Matt Mitrione fight with Brendan Schaub that pitted the two "The Ultimate Fighter" teammates against each other? Y'know, the one with the vicious trash talk building it up? The heavyweight bout we were all looking forward at UFC on Fox 8? It's not happening.

Ariel Helwani reports an injury to Mitrione has knocked the fight off its card. Instead of finding a replacement opponent for Schaub so close to the fight, the UFC is reportedly thinking they will add this fight to a later card.

Schaub/Mitrione isn't the only fight that's been changed. Andy Ogle's injury forced him out of his UFC on Fox Sports 1 1 fight. Now, Connor McGregor will fight Max Holloway. McGregor is coming off a quick knockout win at UFC on Fuel 9. Holloway dropped a split decision to Dennis Bermudez at UFC 160.

Democrats Infuriated That GOP Took Food Stamps Out Of Farm Bill

Republicans stripped food stamp funding from the Farm bill, saying they will work on a separate bill for food stamps later. Other aspects of the Farm bill still stink, but I suppose this is a small step in the right direction. So of course Democrats are infuriated.

House Republicans successfully passed a Farm Bill Thursday by splitting apart funding for food stamps from federal agricultural policy, a move that infuriated the White House and congressional Democrats who spent most of the day trying to delay a final vote.

Lawmakers voted 216 to 208 to make changes to federal agricultural policy and conservation programs and end direct subsidy payments to farmers. But the measure says nothing about funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, which?historically constitutes about 80 percent of the funding in a Farm Bill. ?.

Several Democratic lawmakers rose in opposition to the plan early Thursday as debate began, with several of them repeatedly saying that the new bill ?hurts the children of America? or ?increases hunger in America.

Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) mockingly made a parliamentary inquiry, saying he had just obtained a copy of the 600-page bill.

?It appears to have no nutrition title at all, is this a printing error?? Butterfield asked. (Read More)

Twin roadside bombing kills 5 in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Officials say a twin bombing in southern Afghanistan has killed five people, three civilians whose car struck a roadside bomb and two police officers who had rushed to the scene to help the victims when the second bomb went off.

A provincial government spokesman, Ummar Zawaq, says the attack occurred on Thursday morning in Helmand province.

Zawaq says the officers who died were members of the elite Afghan National Civil Order Police ? the so-called ANCOPs who get special training from NATO forces.

The spokesman says a third officer was wounded in the blast.

Afghan authorities say roadside bombs and booby-traps are their worst threat in fighting the Taliban.

Spotify for Windows Phone 8 Sheds Beta Tags in 'Big' Update

Spotify today cut the beta tags off of its Windows Phone 8 application, launching a "big" update for all users.

According to a Sunday tweet from Microsoft's Windows Phone manager Joe Belfiore, the app, now free of its beta shackles, includes more languages, offline playlist improvements, and track scrubbing.

The update also increases the overall speed and quality of the app, Spotify's user communications manager, Candice Katz, wrote in a short blog post.

Spotify landed on Windows Phone 8 in February. Previously available for Windows Phone 7 users, the application disappeared with the updated Windows Phone 8. Spotify promised in November that the team was working on bringing the app to the updated OS and the beta version arrived several months later.

Most of the application's mobile services are available only to subscribers, but there is a free Internet radio option. Spotify Premium costs $9.99 per month, beginning with a 30-day free trial period.

The Spotify application is currently available for free in the Windows Phone Store.

These updates still aren't enough to keep some users satisfied. With an average rating of three out of five stars, Spotify for WP8 has received a number of less-than-stellar reviews from users, including Nicholas, who handed the app a one-star rating.

"So the update from beta STILL doesn't bring the radio feature to the app???" he wrote. "Come on!! This is essential!"

The iOS version, meanwhile, got a boost last week, with new features and various improvements, all wrapped in a new logo. Included in the update was the new Discover page, initially launched on the Web in late May.

Perhaps Spotify's expansion into other music-discovery sectors can help keep people from jumping ship. Ticketing website StubHub today announced a new in-app feature, allowing Spotify users to seamlessly discover upcoming local music events.

"This latest partnership with Spotify represents how StubHub is now thinking about innovation," Chris Zachos, senior product manager of StubHub's music discovery space, said in a statement. "More than selling tickets, we are focused on partnering with the most creative companies in the industry to give our users an even more seamless and interesting way to discover music and experience live events."

Listed among Spotify's App Finder content, StubHub will automatically display events within a 50-mile radius of each user's city, offering details about concerts and a link to buy tickets.

In-app services are available only via Spotify's desktop client; the StubHub app is not available via Spotify Web or mobile.

Czech president swears in cabinet in showdown with parliament

PRAGUE | Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:57am EDT

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Czech President Milos Zeman swore in a cabinet led by a longtime ally on Wednesday but it faces almost certain rejection by parties in parliament, raising the specter of prolonged political uncertainty in the central European nation.

That would increase the risk of gridlock in policymaking which could hold up a 2014 budget plan and rattle investors, who have long viewed the Czech Republic as a safe haven among emerging economies.

Zeman, a leftist, confirmed economist Jiri Rusnok as prime minister, hoping that he can pull the economy out of a recession now into its second year and lead the country into an election due next year.

But the cabinet is likely to lose a vote of confidence, due within 30 days, as Rusnok's appointment has infuriated both the three parties of the outgoing center-right coalition and the leftist opposition, who all view it as a power grab by Zeman.

Rusnok said after the swearing-in that he would negotiate with parties to try to win support for his government in the confidence vote expected early next month.

Rusnok, who served as finance minister in a Zeman-led cabinet a decade ago, replaces Petr Necas, who resigned last month after a close aide was charged with bribery and illegal spying on Necas's wife, whom he is divorcing.

Prosecutors have asked parliament to lift the former premier's parliamentary immunity so he can be charged as well. Necas said he would fight the charges.

Zeman said Rusnok's government should ensure prosecutors' independence in the investigation.

"The government's task will be to prevent any political pressure in the ongoing investigations and to fully respect the independence of the police and state attorneys," Zeman said at the swearing-in ceremony. "I believe that you will be a guarantee that affairs will not be swept under the carpet."

ZEMAN CITES STRONGER MANDATE

Zeman was elected in the country's first direct presidential election in January and says has a stronger mandate than predecessors chosen by parliament, allowing him to take bold action against the deeply unpopular outgoing coalition.

The three former ruling center-right parties say they command 101 seats in the 200-member lower and demand they be given a chance to form a new government.

If Rusnok loses the confidence vote, Zeman would need to appoint another prime minister. But there are no time limits and rival politicians fear Zeman could drag out the process to keep his favorites in power longer.

The opposition Social Democrats, who lead opinion polls by a wide margin, are pushing for an early election before the next general vote scheduled for May 2014.

The center-right's candidate for prime minister, house speaker Miroslava Nemcova, called the new government "toxic" and left the swearing-in ceremony early to avoid a glass of wine with the new ministers.

The cabinet includes several people who have worked as advisers to Zeman and current and former members of a pro-Zeman faction of the Social Democratic party, which the current president led until 2001. The party leadership has asked them to suspend their party membership.

For finance minister, Rusnok picked Jan Fischer, an economist and former technocrat prime minister in 2009-10.

The Czechs have the highest credit rating among emerging European countries, rated AA- by Standard & Poor's, and their budget deficit is set to fall below the EU-prescribed limit of 3 percent of economic output this year.

But the government's budget-cutting drive in the last three years has pushed the Czech economy into its longest recession in two decades. Fischer and Rusnok have said that returning the country to growth is a top priority for the new government.

Galaxy S4 sales drop; Samsung switches digital ad agencies

Dive summary:?

  • Samsung Telecommunications America?the maker of Galaxy smartphones and tablets and Texas-based branch of the Korean electronics giant Samsung?is switching digital ad agencies to?Interpublic's RGA from Publicis Groupe's Razorfish.
  • According to Razorfish, the switch is credited to budget cuts and a turn to be more "tactically-focused."
  • Neither RGA or Samsung could be reached for comment, but the switch does follow disappointing sales of Samsung's most popular product, the Galaxy S4 smartphone.

From the article:?

... "The shift comes about two years after Todd Pendleton joined Samsung Telecommunications America as its Chief Marketing Officer. Prior to taking on the role, he was global brand communications director at Nike, where he worked since 1996, according to his profile on LinkedIn. googlemaps_new

Back in May 2013 at its I/O developers conference, when Google previewed their?updated Android version of Google Maps for desktop and mobile, it was expected that Google will soon start to roll out the new maps UI.

As spotted by Android Police, a major update for the app has appeared in the Google Play store, sporting an overhauled interface and new discovery features. The update doesn?t seem to be appearing on devices yet, but Google promises it ?will be gradually rolling out to Android 4.0.3+ users over the next few weeks.?

At its event Google said this new version is bringing a more personalized experience, while the change-log reveals new navigation data with ?live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting.? Ratings, reviews and other info have also been pushed to the front in an effort to help users find out more about local places, and on tablets an ?Experience? feature should bring enhanced indoor walkthroughs.

Does the rail explosion fuel pipeline plans? | Washington Post

Founded in 1884 when the Canadian Pacific Railway began construction on the final leg of track linking Montreal and the Port of Saint John in New Brunswick, Lac-M?gantic was shaken Saturday when an oil-laden train bound for a Saint John refinery derailed and exploded, leaving at least 13 dead and dozens unaccounted for.

The Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway train, with 72 cars of crude oil from North Dakota?s Bakken basin, was left unattended by its conductor and rolled downhill, blowing a hole in downtown Lac-M?gantic, likened to ?a war zone? by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The dead found Monday were burned beyond recognition, officials said.

The explosion near the border of Maine also reverberated in the rest of Canada and the United States, where people are hotly debating what mode of transportation is safest and most economical for carrying the steadily growing output of crude oil from North Dakota and northern Alberta?s oil sands. And it reignited calls for tougher standards for ethanol and crude oil tank cars.

U.S. railroads are already carrying more than 1 million barrels of crude oil a day, bolstered by new shale-oil boom regions such as North Dakota and Texas. Proponents of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline may now be bolstered by arguing that pipelines are safer and more fuel-efficient than trains.

?We?ve seen over and over that derailments are not a matter of if but when,? said Brett VandenHeuvel of Columbia Riverkeeper, part of a nongovernmental network devoted to protecting waterways. ?We know a train derails, and when it is carrying hazardous cargo, it?s a threat to our public safety, our economy and our environment.?

VandenHeuvel, who has worked to stop coal, liquefied natural gas and oil export plans, is opposing a proposal by refiner Tesoro to ship 380,000 barrels a day of oil by rail for export from a terminal in the port of Vancouver, Wash. Port officials have scheduled a vote on the project for July 23.

While most environmental and industry groups refrained from doing more than offering condolences to the people of Lac-
M?gantic, the implications could be profound.

The State Department said in its recent environmental impact statement that if a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline is denied, oil producers would simply send their product to markets via railroads. The pipeline would carry oil from northern Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast. As a result, the State Department reasoned, blocking the pipeline would have no beneficial impact on greenhouse gas emissions because the oil sands would be developed anyway.

A heightened sense of danger about rail cuts both ways in the Keystone debate. On the one hand, climate activists can argue that the dangers of rail make it a less viable alternative and strengthen their argument that denying a permit for Keystone could stop some oil-sands development.

Dublin will break out in golf balls to promote Presidents Cup

By JENNIFER NOBLIT

ThisWeek Community News Wednesday July 10, 2013 10:06 AM

Golf balls of unusual size will soon be set up around Dublin, heralding the coming of the Presidents Cup.

Dublin City Council members last week gave staff members the go ahead to seek sponsors for nine golf ball sculptures, and as many as 18 if enough sponsors can be found.

The community art that will work to create awareness of the Presidents Cup event coming to Dublin's Muirfield Village Golf Club in October includes a three-foot golf ball mounted on a tee and base.

"Each statue could be sponsored by a Dublin business and decorated by a Dublin school, community organization or community partner to showcase the vibrant, dynamic aspects of the city," a staff report to council stated.

"Each statue would bear a placard listing the name of the sponsoring and decorating organizations, as well as information about Dublin."

The golf balls will be placed throughout Dublin, the staff report said, and include a map with the locations of the other golf ball sculptures.

Companies could sponsor the golf ball sculptures for between $1,500 and $2,000.

"We believe there will be four sold without even asking," said Sandra Puskarcik, Dublin's director of community relations.

City Manager Marsha Grigsby said the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has volunteered to help find sponsors and the Dublin Arts Council can help find artists to paint the golf balls.

Other promotions and activities for the Presidents Cup are proceeding and include a street piano for Historic Dublin that will be painted in a golf theme.

An upright piano and bench called "Playing Through" will host pianists and offer time for the public to tickle the ivories.

After the Presidents Cup is over the interactive artwork with "an open invitation for all to sit down and take a turn at the keyboard" will be both inside and outside at different events, a news release from the Dublin Arts Council said.

ALTernative, the Columbus-based artists team led by Tim Lai and Eliza Ho, will paint the piano and the artwork will be dedicated during the Aug. 13 opening of "emerging," the annual student art exhibition.

"Music and visual art transcend language and the arts are the perfect vehicle for welcoming guests from around the world to our community," said David Guion, Dublin Arts Council executive director.

"I look forward to adding 'Playing Through' to Dublin's noteworthy public art collection and to seeing residents and visitors enjoying interaction with this piece of public art."

Community input is being sought by ALTernative for inspiration for painting the piano through a survey at surveymonkey.com/s/ T63CXN3. The survey will be available through midnight July 22.

The piano will be part of the Oct. 3 street festival with professional and public players, Puskarcik said.

The street festival is slated to run from 5 to 10 p.m. and will shut down Bridge and High streets.

International, "Irish is an Attitude" and community stages are planned for entertainment, Puskarcik said.

"The community stage will be all Dublin City School children," she said.

Beer and wine vendors are being contacted for the festival in addition to food trucks. Historic Dublin restaurants also are being asked to develop a to-go option for the evening, Puskarcik said.

The Presidents Cup will bring two teams of golfers -- a United States team versus an international team -- to compete at Muirfield Village Oct. 1-6.

An Oct. 3 Old Dublin street festival with other public art also will celebrate the event.

Galaxy S4 Zoom vs. Galaxy S4: Is Samsung?s New Camera-Smartphone Hybrid Worth The Extra Weight?

samsung galaxy s4 zoom
Is the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom worth the extra weight? (Photo: idigitaltimes.com)

The Samsung Galaxy S4 had already become one of the most prominent Android smartphones on the market before Samsung bravely decided to release three new variations of its flagship smartphone.?In early June, at a special media event?in London, Samsung unveiled a water-resistant, budget-friendly?and an experimental point-and-shoot camera-smartphone hybrid dubbed the Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Follow Us

Of all the new variants announced, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is by far and away the most ambitious. The Galaxy S4 Zoom is created in the likeness of the Samsung Galaxy Camera, a point-and-shoot camera that was released by Samsung in August 2012, and one of the first mass-market point-and-shoot cameras to run on Android. Although the original Galaxy Camera was capable of running nearly any Android app, it didn't have any cellular capabilities, which limited its ability to share photos from anywhere without a Wi-Fi connection. The Galaxy S4 Zoom aims to pick up where the Samsung Galaxy Camera left off by providing a long-range zoom, Xenon flash and cellular capabilities.

Although the Galaxy S4 Zoom has an impressive 10x optical zoom, which is a key feature on the device, the optical zoom adds a surprising amount of heft to the smartphone. Aside from the zooming lens, there are only a few points of differentiation between the standard Galaxy S4 and its camera-focused counterpart, the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Here's our assessment on whether the Galaxy S4 Zoom is really worth the extra heft:

Size

The Galaxy S4 Zoom is substantially wider than the standard Galaxy S4, and that bulk is largely due to the telescoping lens that pops out of the back of the smartphone. The Galaxy S4 Zoom is about .44 inches wider, .25 inches taller and .30 inches thicker than the standard variant. All that extra volume adds about 2.75 ounces of weight to the smartphone. It's one of the heaviest smartphones that Samsung makes, and it's even heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, which makes the Galaxy S4 Zoom's size one of the biggest tradoffs of the device.

The standard Galaxy S4 is in every significantly thinner than it's camera-oriented counterpart. It takes up a fraction of the space that the Galaxy S4 Zoom does, and because of it, the Galaxy S4 weighs significantly less than the Galaxy S4 Zoom.?

Winner: Galaxy S4 (slimmer and smaller by every proportion)

Display

The Galaxy S4 Zoom sacrifices screen clarity and screen size in order to pack in high-end point-and-shoot lens at a reasonable price. The Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 4.3-inch screen that displays a measly 540 x 960 resolution. In addition to being equipped with a low-resolution screen, the Galaxy S4 Zoom is packed with 256 pixels-per-inch (PPI), which is a relatively low pixel density.

The standard Galaxy S4 is equipped with a 5-inch screen that's noticeably larger than the camera-focused variant. The Galaxy S4 displays images at a 1080 x 1920 resolution, and the display is incredibly sharp thanks to the 441 PPI pixel density. When it comes to viewing high-resolution images, the Galaxy S4 is a no-brainer.

Winner: Galaxy S4 (1080 x 1920 resolution; 441 pixels-per-inch, 5-inch screen)

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom comes equipped with a powerful Samsung Exynos 4212 processor. It's a dual-core 1.5GHz ARM processor that's paired with 1GB of RAM for a relatively snappy experience. The Samsung Exynos 4 processor?used in the Galaxy S4 Zoom is similar to the processor that was used in the Samsung Galaxy S3. The processor is paired with 1GB of RAM for a reasonably fast experience, although it simply can't keep up with the latest processors.

The standard Galaxy S4 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor?that has been proven to be one of the most reliable mobile processors. It's a quad-core 1.9 GHz Krait processor that's paired with 2GB of RAM for one of the smoothest experiences of any Android smartphone on the market. The Galaxy S4 also comes with 16GB of internal memory and microSD card slot that can store up to 64 GB of data.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S4 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor; 1.9GHz quad-core)

Camera

The Galaxy S4 Zoom's hardware fails to impress in just about every category aside from the camera. The Galaxy S4 Zoom features a 16-megapixel camera with a Xenon flash (similar to most point-and-shoot cameras rather than the LED flashes featured on most smartphones). The ultra-sharp camera is a 10X optical zoom that far surpasses any typical phone camera. The smartphone is capable of shooting full 1080p HD video and taking excellent photographs. The camera comes with a variety of pre-sets and features to make snapping photos in almost any setting a breeze.

The standard Galaxy S4 has a 13-megapixel camera, but it's nowhere near the same size or quality as the camera included on the Galaxy S4 Zoom. The LED flash included on the Galaxy S4 is typical of most smartphones, but it leaves most nighttime photos looking washed out and poorly lit. The Galaxy S4 also shoots at 1080p HD and comes with many of the same pre-set modes that the Galaxy S4 Zoom does.

Winner: Galaxy S4 Zoom (16-megapixels; 10X optical zoom; 1080p HD video)

Conclusion

Unless you're planning to frequently take photographs of things that are far away, we can't imagine why you'd ever want the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Sure, there's an element of experimentalism and novelty, but most smartphone users would prefer the larger, sharper screen of the Galaxy S4 in addition to its slimmer casing. We could never imagine answer e-mails, texts and phone calls on a device as bulky as the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Unless the primary purpose of your phone is to photograph items from a far distance, we wouldn't recommend the Galaxy S4 Zoom to anyone.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S4 (better processor, sharper screen, marginally worse camera)

WTCC: Rotek puts Ford WTCC plans on hold

Robb Holland WTCCRotek Racing has put plans to enter the World Touring Car Championship with the ex-Arena Motorsport Ford Focuses on hold.

The VLN squad bought the ex-Arena machines earlier this year and had planned to race them later in the season ahead of a full campaign in 2014.

But with the WTCC confirming it will run to new regulations in 2014, Rotek is now considering its options

American tin-top racer Robb Holland, who is the only driver confirmed for the programme so far, is concerned that factory efforts such as Citroen's could push costs up.

"We're trying to figure it out and we've done a bunch of testing," he said.

"The issue is the new rules package being [introduced] for 2014. It's a struggle to find new investment with the focus more on the manufacturers than independents.

"The big question is, with the manufacturers coming in, what happens to budgets? At the moment they are very reasonable."

Holland believes the key will be how much help the older cars, such as the Focus, are given to be able to compete with the new machines.

"I don't think the WTCC knows exactly which way to go," he added. "If they don't performance balance the cars I don't think the team will have any interest in competing.

"I still think it's the right championship to be in, but it's got to make sense for independents."

BTCC OUTINGS

Holland also confirmed he is hoping to appear in the British Touring Car Championship this year, driving one of Tony Gilham's Team Hard Vauxhall Insignias.

Team Hard Vauxhall InsigniaThe American, who raced at the Snetterton and Croft rounds last season, is one of four drivers set to test the ex-James Cole machine this week.

He hopes to race at Snetterton next month and take in one further round, if his VLN endurance commitments allow.

"Tony and I agreed at the beginning of the year we'd do at least a couple of races," said the 45-year-old.

"Snetterton is likely and I'd like to do another round; it depends on the schedule."

'The Way, Way Back' writers, directors, and stars Nat Faxon and Jim

Nat Faxon and Jim Rash may have won an Oscar for their adapted screenplay for The Descendants, but that doesn?t mean that they take themselves too seriously. It?s quite the opposite. Self-deprecating and humbled by their recent high-profile successes, Faxon and Rash are just giddy at the chance to talk about a movie that is entirely their creation. They wrote, directed, and acted in the summertime coming-of-age tale? The Way, Way Back, which opened in theaters last Friday.

The two multi-talented guys took the EW Pop Culture Personality Test during a recent press junket for the movie. We won?t spoil too much but Rash does admit to a longtime love of My So-Called Life.

Now we kind of want a bobblehead of Dean Pelton, too.

What's in a Grape? The Bonarda from Italy is not the same from Argentina or California

Click photo to enlarge

Label: Parducci at one time called a Pinot Noir.

One of the biggest questions that come to me is what to expect from a particular grape. That is sometimes tied to another question that is common, where did this grape come from?

There are cases where the origin of a particular grape produced a different taste when we compare with the more recent areas of production. This is exemplified by the Bonarda grape from Italy.

The Bonarda grape, also called the Bonarda Piedmontese, was a grape that was widely planted in the Piedmont area of Italy alongside the Sangiovese grapes. Over the years, Bonarda, and the related grapes of Bonarda Novarese have drastically dwindled to becoming rare even in Italy.

This grape was widely used to blend with the big red Barbera grape. The qualities of the Bonarda grape were so floral and light-fruited it would bring a balance to the heavy Barbera flavor. It was prized so much as a blending grape that it acquired Italian region and city names to distinguish the blends made by the local wineries.

While at one time, the Bonarda plantings constituted over 30 percent of the total vines in Italy, there are only a few wineries left that use it to blend their red wines.

In Argentina, there is a confusion of the use of Bonarda. It has been discovered that while the plantings of what Argentina growers say is the Bonarda is not that grape at all. What they have planted is the Douce Noir grape.

The Argentine mistake of Bonarda has developed into a cult following. While they used the Douce

Noir from France and not the actual Bonarda Piedmontese, the Mendoza growers have produced excellent wines with this grape that I would compare with the finest Chianti Classico wines from Italy.

There are some similarities with the Bonarda and the Douce Noir. Both are lighter with more pronounced floral bouquet and plum-like fruitiness. Both wines were primarily used as blending grapes.

A part of the reason for the cult following of the Douce Noir is because of the confusion it caused in California. The growers in Napa at the Parducci and Inglenook were making this into what they called a Barbera. Some of the growers actually thought this grape was a Pinot Noir that was ripening later than the rest of the region. But, the viticulture was determined in 1941 by researchers at the University of California, Davis that it wasn't Barbera that Inglenook was winning awards with, it was Douce Noir, only they called the grape Charbono.

The differences between the Douce Noir/Charbono and the Bonarda are heavier tannins with the Charbono, a more black fruit flavor like cassis versus a sweet red plum with the Bonarda. The Douce Noir/Charbono will, when aged in oak, bring out leather and tar characteristics. Some blends have been known to age for more than 15 years with the Charbono wines from California and improve nicely.

While the old-school Bonarda from Italy is disappearing from the wine world, there are makers of the Bonarda in Argentina (mislabeling the grape used) producing excellent wines at very reasonable prices. While what they called the Bonarda in Argentina once was the most common grape planted, it is fast being replaced by the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

I would recommend buying it by the case and cellaring some for later trading because of the cult-like attraction to these Argentine wines.

If you are shopping for a Charbono from California, look for a warmer inland vineyard with a longer growing season. These grapes need a long growing season to fully ripen or they will tend to have a leafy-like quality.

I found a bottle by Antonio Vallana that blended Bonarda with Nebbiolo and Vespolina that was very nice. I found out they use cement fermentation vessels and hand-pick all three varieties for this particular blend. The wine sold for $29.

The pure varietals of Bonarda from Argentina were considerably lower priced, even the "Reserva" wines I found. There were 4 brands at a larger Albuquerque wine store where none were over $18.

As with the California use of the grape Charbono, there are a number of options. With the 100% Charbono wines, I suggest to start with the Inglenook because those are some of the oldest vines in the US. Expect to pay a little more for the Napa wines. But the California wineries are blending with Petite Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. On one online source, I found a blend with Chenin Blanc in a sparkling wine and a Charbono ros? that comes from Russian River that begs to be tried.

Facebook begins rolling out Graph Search to U.S. users

Facebook's Graph Search.

(Credit: Screenshot by Dara Kerr/CNET)

Brace yourself for another Facebook search bar change.

The social-networking giant will begin rolling out an advanced search feature on Monday designed to tap its massive base of 1 billion users to answers users' questions about people, photos, places, and interests. Graph Search, which was announced earlier this year, will be available to users in the United States and others who use the American English version of the site, with access to other languages coming soon, a Facebook representative told CNET.

Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg announced the new feature in January, billing it as a new way find people, photos, places and interests that are most relevant to Facebook users. By incorporating various filters such as "place type," "liked by," and "visited by friends," users can use the structured search tool to find people in their network and uncover potential connections.

The new tool, which was rolled out to a limited number of users earlier this year, will appear as a bigger search bar at the top of each page, replacing the usual white search bar. Not to be confused with Web searches, which use a set of keywords to come up with results that best match the search words, Graph Search combines phrases to return content from its own audience.

Recognizing that the new tool exposes a copious amount of personal data that members may not realize is available for public scrutiny, Facebook has been working to quell users' privacy fears, including implementing specific search rules that dictate what results regarding teenagers that adults can see.

The search feature could prove key to keeping users members engaged on the site. My CNET colleague Jennifer Van Grove called the powerful discovery tool "smart, original, and a foundational piece of Facebook's future as a relevant social network."

Egypt's Second Revolution - Amid Egypt Turmoil, Israel Eyes Troubled Sinai

Israel should do all it can to help the new secular government in Egypt beat the Muslim Brotherhood, even if that means amending the Military Annex of the Camp David peace accords to allow more Egyptian military assets into the Sinai Peninsula, the former director of the Counter-Terrorism Bureau in the Prime Minister's Office Brig. Gen. (Res.) Nitzan Nuriel said Sunday.

Speaking on Army Radio, Nuriel said a defeat for the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters in the Sinai would reverberate across the Middle East, and would be of huge strategic importance to Israel. The Egyptian army is currently engaged in battle with Islamists across the Sinai. According to Al Gomhuria [The Republic], an Egyptian newspaper, the Egyptian military, accompanied by warplanes, are battling "terrorists and jihadists elements" in the Sinai. Al Gomhuria reported that the military presented its planned operation to Mohammed Morsi when he was still president, but that the latter rejected the idea "without offering an explanation."?

Pointing to the increasing instability of Sinai, Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman MK Avigdor Lieberman (Likud-Beytenu) warned over the weekend that Jihadists in the Sinai Peninsula are taking advantage of the current turmoil in Egypt to stage attacks on Israel. "What is transpiring in Egypt should in no doubt be worrying us," he said. "This is our largest neighboring country, the first one we signed a peace agreement with, and clearly instability over there carries implications for the entire region. It is in our interest for Egypt to be stable and in full control over its territory.

A Salafi terror group took responsibility for rocket fire on Eilat on Thursday. The Sunni extremist group Jamaat Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis stated in a message from its Sinai base that the group would continue to target Israel. "Jews, enemies of Allah, are those who are responsible for what is happening in Egypt and their long arm is to blame for the current situation," the statement said. "We bombed them to scare them and let them know that Allah is with us." In addition, a new Islamist militant group calling itself Ansar al-Shariah in Egypt announced its formation amid the chaos. The group said it would gather arms and start training its members, in a statement posted on an online forum for militants in the country's Sinai region on Friday and recorded by the SITE Monitoring organization, Reuters reported.

The group blamed the events on secularists, Egyptian Coptic Christians, state security forces and army commanders, who they said would turn the country into ?a crusader, secular freak.? It denounced democracy and said it would instead champion Islamic law, or sharia, acquire weapons and train to allow Muslims to "deter the attackers, preserve the religion and empower the sharia." Meanwhile, Israel believes that Hamas will continue to maintain the cease-fire as it serves its own interests, an Israeli defense official told Israel Radio on Saturday. According to the official, this weekend's global jihad call to fight the Egyptian army will "lead the army to take further action against Islamist elements and make a determined effort to restore order."

Last week Egypt sealed numerous tunnels to prevent arms smuggling from Sinai into Egypt that may destabilize the mainland. The official said that while events in Egypt were a blow to Hamas, the terror group would continue to maintain the cease-fire with Israel as it is in its own interests to do so. Meanwhile, Egyptian security officials say suspected Islamic militants have bombed a natural gas pipeline to Jordan south of the city of el-Arish in the Sinai Peninsula. In addition to starting fires that were soon put out, the attacks early Sunday on two points on the pipeline disrupted the flow of natural gas, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In January, suspected Islamic militants attacked a police patrol along a Sinai pipeline, wounding seven policemen. Though it had come under attack more than a dozen times in the previous two years, Sunday was the first attack on Egypt's natural gas pipelines in Sinai in over a year. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the pipeline and checkpoint attacks or if they were in reaction to the Egyptian army's overthrow of Morsi on Wednesday.
